Little Snail Books Educate at a Fast Pace

“Sound bites” are the news teasers of the airwaves. Lightening-speed information demands that we express ourselves in a snappy way much of the time. This new paradigm is what gives rise to slang, abbreviation (aka “text speak”) and sometimes, just plain poor English. While this may sound like the beginning of the end for our linguistic heritage, there is a ray of hope. Parents can teach their children the skills necessary to communicate succinctly and efficiently, in a style known as “talk less, say more”. Publishing house Little Snail Series encourages this type of heightened communication.

While many other books for young children help build an understanding of basic words and phrases, the Little Snail books help enhance vocabulary by using more complicated words. It might seem like a slightly unconventional tactic to use “next level” words while dealing with young children, but by hearing these words, kids can absorb them as they go along and gain a more comprehensive understanding of English.

Each Little Snail book features a different snail on an adventure exploring both the outside world and their inner world of thoughts and feelings. The books take place in various locations, so parents can expose their children to the diversity of our world with all its different kinds of people, animals, cultures and customs. The books paint each snail’s world in a rich and imaginative way that’s likely to pique a child’s imagination.

In addition to teaching linguistic expansion and diversity, the Little Snail books also encourage emotional intelligence and character building by addressing a variety of issues and problems. For example, the snail in Fez Runs Away to the Sahara is going through a case of the “gimmes”. She is used to getting what she wants and is quite disappointed to hear that her desire for a swimming pool cannot be fulfilled due to a drought. Initially, Fez runs away, but eventually she learns a valuable lesson and returns home to her family.

The mastermind behind this unique book series is New York-based author Grace Lee. Her passion is to create a learning environment in which children can thrive. Her goal is to use creative, effective tools to open up a child’s world to language and art in a way that few children’s authors are doing. Grace was inspired to write the Little Snail books when her daughter Stella was born. As a working mom, Grace’s schedule left little time for the creative process, so she wrote most of the early drafts of Little Snail while on her train commute to and from work.

Grace’s vision –– and Little Snail Series’ motto –– is “unraveling the genius”. The saying refers to the work parents and educators do to help children discover their natural curiosity, talents and abilities. She believes that by giving kids a well-rounded education that encourages exploration of various cultures, artistic styles, and experiences, they will have a better shot at reaching their full potential. The educational value of these books can be further enhanced by visiting the Little Snail Series website and downloading some of the books’ companion worksheets.

Little Snail Series is a promoter of fair trade and eco-friendly practices in the manufacture of books, toys and other items. The Little Snail books are printed in soy-based ink, and the toys available on the Little Snail website are also made from natural materials.
