The ABC Kids Expo returns to Las Vegas October 15-18 and that has made a lot of people smile. I know that I always have a good time at ABC, and am looking forward to some laughs together with my explorations for new juvenile products. Before the show begins, I wanted to find out what makes some of the exhibitors laugh, and how they plan to generate big smiles from buyers. I was particularly pleased to hear that most of the manufacturers I asked said that their children, spouses or family members are what makes them laugh the most. I agree!

New York International Gift Fair - NY Now - New York City, New York (8/17/13 - 8/21/13)

NY NOW, the Market for Home & Lifestyle (formerly the NY International Gift Fair), ran from August 17 to August 21 in typical grand style at the Javits Center. New companies as well as seasoned veterans basked in the updated venue. The LIFESTYLE Collection featured the Baby + Child category, where over 100 companies congregated to show the freshest ideas in the market. The Wind & the Sail, Hickies, PishPosh Mommy, and Fluf were just a few of the in-demand product providers that exhibited at the show.

Anyone who does business within the children’s market understands this important fact: mom is really the focus of the industry. Adorable clothes, educational toys, accessories, and kid-friendly products wouldn’t find homes if moms (and those that love them) didn’t get an eyeful. Making mom comfortable is tops on the list of industry agendas: after all, mom is not only the target market, but she’s usually the heart of the home. SoYoung, the creator of top-of-the-line handbags, diaper bags and lunch bags, understands a mother’s needs: she wants comfortable, functional products that deliver on quality and utility. She also wants something fun and fashionable.

When disposable diapers first arrived on the scene, many parents thought they had hit the jackpot. No mess, no washing, and no hassle. However, it wasn’t long before concerns about disposable diapers began to arise. While disposable diaper companies are making efforts to improve the eco-friendliness of their products and many parents are still loyal users of these major brands, there has been a strong movement back toward cloth diapering in recent years, creating a market opportunity for increased sales of convenient cloth diapers and accessories. For consideration, The Giggle Guide® presents products from Bumkins, Itzy Ritzy, Bummas, and Dimpleskins Naturals.

We are excited to announce that registration is now open to manufacturers for the 6th Annual All Baby & Child Spring Educational Conference & Trade Show, being held May 20-22, 2014 in Orlando, Florida!

“I was truly at my wit’s end,” shares Erin Kelly, founder of Hulabye. Like many other enthusiastic parents, Kelly was enthralled with every stage of her daughter’s growth… until baby decided that life was too short to stay still for a diaper change. The squirmy tot made diaper changes a challenge, but Kelly, who is also a physician, put her creativity to work. Her diligence to create a superior product has paid off: the Happy Changer, a vest design which secures baby safely to a changing pad, is a hands-down customer favorite.

Attending a panel discussion presented about how retailers can better work with bloggers and social media outlets, I remembered Marshall McLuhan’s famous quote from my college days: “The medium is the message.” He meant something about the medium influencing, and thus becoming part of, how the message is perceived. It kinda confused me then, just as I realized after the Q&A session that there is a lot of confusion about the ever-changing online media called “social.” Some retailers remained puzzled as to why anyone would be interested in what moms say about their families. One reason they should care is because many of these messages are influencing buying decisions and helping to build brands.
