Footwear can be pricey for families with children, especially those on a budget. Kids grow out of shoes so quickly, it can be tempting to go to a local discount store and pick up the least expensive pair, hoping that they don’t wear out before the child moves up to the next size. But the selection at many large chain stores can be surprisingly small and not always what the parents are looking for. Luckily, shoes don’t have to be expensive to be cute and stylish. Itzy Bitzy carries a great selection of trendy kid’s shoes that won’t hurt the family budget.

Sometimes the simplest ideas become the most successful. When Lori Cohen’s 6-year-old daughter put on a pair of sneakers that were slightly too big she suggested putting something in the eyelets to make them tighter. “That night Shoeglits came to me in my sleep. I woke up and made my first prototype,” states Cohen. Originally the products were designed for girls ages 5-10 who wanted to “jazz up their sneakers.” Now the brand is growing to include boys, teens and moms.

The ABC Spring Conference is an event that brings together a cross section of children’s specialty product retailers. The conference is unique because it’s not just a trade show; it’s an educational opportunity. This year, the ABC Conference took place at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, Florida. Retailers who participated enjoyed beautiful surroundings as they expanded their entrepreneurial experience. There were some standout participants at this year’s conference. I Can Tie Shoelaces, Rhoost, Happy Kidz and Snuggy Baby presented products to enhance the health and well-being of babies and young children.

Dallas Apparel & Accessories Market - Dallas, Texas (3/26/14 - 3/29/14)

Everything’s bigger in Texas, and this holds true for the Dallas PBJ: Play Baby Juvenile Trade Show, held March 27th and 28th in the Dallas Market Center. The Market Center is a large, impressive venue that’s home to a number of vendors year round and also hosts special annual events like the PBJ. Out of the thousands of products and companies on display, the handful that caught our attention had a common thread: they’re designed to make life easier. Buggy Bench, InchBug, Nizo Wear and SnapFlaps all offer families functional and attractive products that make daily tasks more convenient and fun.

NY Now - New York City, New York (2/1/14 - 2/6/14)

NY NOW™, the Market for Home + Lifestyle (formerly NYIGF®) made BizBash’s “New York’s Top 100” list for 2014 — little wonder, considering the strong impact the show has had. The show attracted over 30,000 attendees from more than 80 countries. The February show ran from the 1st through the 6th at New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Not all companies with great products took home awards, but both new and veteran retailers did show a stellar uptick in orders. Companies like Anaïs & I, Scentco Inc., EFL Sales (Fiona Walker England and Albetta), and Calisson Inc drew a lot of attention.

Michele Keeler is a triple threat in the design world, creating clothing, shoes, and items for the home. This is quite the impressive resumé for someone who became a professional designer by “accident.” It was 1996 and Michele was a single mom of two young children. Like many moms, especially those living on a single income, she faced the challenge of keeping her little ones in clothing that looked good and fit them well. Luckily, she had sewing skills and a good eye for fashion, so making clothing for her kids wasn’t just a task to endure, but a pursuit that made her happy.

Few milestones are as important to parents as a child’s first steps. What’s on their little fearless feet during this time is crucial for development and safety. As studies continue to show the importance of keeping tykes toddling in soft shoes or socks, some can be too tight or too slippery. These four companies can keep little feet rocking without compromising security or fashion: Zuzii, Bubysums, Snowflakes and Sunflowers and Vs. Stuff.

It’s time to PLAE! This unique shoe company is at the forefront of design and function, offering customizable shoes that look great and promote healthy foot development. One look at this fancy footwear will make most kids beg to have a pair, and will have grown-ups wishing that they’d had shoes this cool when they were young. What’s so special about PLAE shoes? They look great for many reasons, but it’s all about the tabs. All Velcro shoes have fastening tabs, but PLAE takes it up a notch. Customers can purchase additional fastening tabs in a mind-boggling variety of colors and prints, so that they can create a whole new look for their shoes whenever the mood strikes.

The Atlanta International Gift & Home Furnishings Market® - Atlanta, Georgia (1/7/14 - 1/13/14)

“The response was amazing!” And that about sums it up for the The Atlanta International Gift & Home Furnishings Market. Companies that exhibited at the January 2014 market were unanimous in declaring that it was a hit. With more than seven million square feet of space for exhibitors, AmericasMart Atlanta can afford bragging rights. Its new app launched to rave reviews, scoring in the top ten business apps, according to iTunes. In January alone, new buyer rates went up double digits, indicating an increasing wave of interest. Companies that made their mark at the event include Livie & Cole, Fizoos, Night Buddies and FoneFace.

Today, even young kids want to look stylish no matter what the weather. Umbrellas and rain boots can seem clunky, dull and uncool, and kids may balk at getting dressed for wet days because they worry their rain clothes will harm their playground cred. Let’s not blame it all on the kids though; many parents are fashion-conscious as well and prefer their children to have rain gear that matches their other outerwear. Aquarella Kids may just have the answer. The children’s clothing retailer offers umbrellas, rain boots, backpacks, pencil cases, wallets and lunch boxes that can be bought separately or purchased together in coordinating sets.
