Children’s fashion was out in full force last month at the Playtime New York trade show. The event, which took place at Metropolitan West in downtown Manhattan, welcomed 120 presenters and thousands of visitors. Today’s children’s designers are challenged to create clothing and room decor that suits the updated, more sophisticated style that older grade school kids and tweens often want. Like all things whimsical and important, Eggkids started with a dream. A dream to create a character that would make people feel happy; someone who would warm hearts. Someone who smiles at everyone and makes them smile back. First on the scene was Erik the Elephant, strong and loyal. He spreads his love generously and shares wisdom and happiness. He’s now part of a 25-character family living and smiling on clothes and accessories designed for children up to 6 years old. Erik, Albin the Monkey, Anton the Anteater and Maja the Cat are just some of the animal friends that come from the big wild world, where designer Hans-Jörgen Hansson finds his inspiration.

Babies do lots of things well –– among them is growing fast. Blink and the baby who fit that outfit perfectly has totally grown out of it. The answer is adjustable clothes which comes to fruition via Posheez by American Posh. The line is the brainchild of Denisa Dragu who was unable to find a quality one-piece that would fit her long, slim newborn. Before you could say “perfect fit,” she came up with premium quality clothes that can be tweaked so body and outfit actually come together perfectly.

When vintage clothing lovers have kids, many of them want to pass down their appreciation to the next generation. After all, who doesn’t love a baby or child in vintage clothing? The softer, more innocent styles suit the spirit of childhood, and these classic garments are usually very well made. Of course, authentic vintage children’s clothing can be difficult to find, so some enterprising clothing makers offer new clothing that’s inspired by vintage style and quality. Sticky Fudge is one of the most successful brands in that category.

There’s no bigger joy than holding a new healthy baby in your arms. Two moms who know that joy founded Baby Hero, a line of organic baby and toddler clothing that’s gentle enough for soft baby skin, but strong enough to handle the snuggles and the joys of growing and playing. It also supports mothers who may not have access to information and care needed to keep those babies in our world. Three million babies die each year in their first month of life and Baby Hero is dedicated to a “Giving Model.” Each purchase from Baby Hero funds a Neonatal Survival Kit for a mother and her baby in a disadvantaged community.
