Capitalizing on the importance of a child’s imagination, Box Play for Kids offers eco-friendly kids stickers to repurpose recyclables into fun, new toys. The company was inspired by owner Janette Harwell’s 2-year-old daughter and her love for stickers and a “penchant for playing with empty boxes.” Harwell continues, “I had an ‘aha’ moment that lead to the invention of Box Play for Kids.” Fortunately for Harwell’s daughter, both her parents are designers who have specialized in package design, branding and advertising for over 20 years.

One of the joys of having kids is getting them dressed for the holidays. It’s not just the frilly dresses or cute mini tuxedos; it’s the nearly endless array of more casual holiday wear that parents can’t resist. Every year, department and discount stores are stocked with new shirts, pants and sweats sporting seasonal images and sayings. It’s easy to grab these items as impulse purchases, and they make for great holiday photos, but sometimes parents end up asking themselves whether the expenditure was worth it. Now there’s Switch a roo, a clothing line that uses interchangeable appliqués to take an outfit “from holiday to everyday and back again”.

‘Sweet, chic, animal lover, fancy, funky, international, free spirited.” In time this list created by a group of 10-year-old girls turned into Sugar Lulu: a company dedicated to giving tween girls the products they want. Owner and developer Shari Kaufman was inspired by her tween daughter’s struggle to find clothes that were not too babyish, sophisticated, or inappropriate. Sugar Lulu has a modern vintage look with products that inspire girls to express their style, explore their creativity and just embrace their love of beautiful things.

It’s amazing how childhood experiences can shape a person’s artistic passions. Most often it’s not the major events that make the biggest impact, but the small details — the magical combinations of scents, colors, sounds and touch — that create strongest and most lasting impressions. This is true for Elizabeth Cross, the founder of the Fiametta Toy Company and the creator of Stork Babies. When Elizabeth was a child, she was captivated by the colorful, charming miniature dolls she came across while in Greece. Fast forward to 2012; Elizabeth is running her own business selling dolls based on these childhood memories, and loving every minute of it.

The year was 1980, and robots were emerging as the new trend. The first of a flood of robot-related movies and TV shows had begun to appear, and the possibility of building, programming and even living side by side with robots was seen as a fantastic dream that might just come true. At the time, California-based company OWI was only 2 years young but already seeking out ways to expand their line of inventory and widen their customer base. OWI was ahead of its time in introducing kids to alternative energy through various solar-powered building projects. Products of this kind are still among their best sellers today.

When Jennifer Toenjes, owner of Sweet Baby Bowtique, gave birth to her baby girl, she was so ecstatic for the bows and ruffles that were about to enter her life. But all the bows and hair accessories Toenjes found at local retailers were not up to her standards, so she taught herself how to make her own. “My daughter Abbie is the entire inspiration behind my business!” says Toenjes. Sweet Baby Bowtique is mainly an online retailer specializing in baby headbands and offering baby hair bows, big girl larger size hair bows, tutus, leg warmers, bloomer/ diaper covers, hair bow instructions and a soon-to-arrive Mom’s Corner.

With the unblinking glow of screens just about everywhere, many families are turning towards simpler times… and simpler means of entertainment. Simple toys like marbles and wooden cutouts encourage creativity. Simple craft projects inspire kids to explore their artistic senses and then utilize their personalized artwork in imaginative play. The attraction of simple toys and games lies in the ability to gently challenge, bring people together, and entertain. Companies like Maple Landmark Woodcraft, House of Marbles, eeBoo, and Seedling New Zealand are bringing some of the best in children’s products to generations of families.

In her new children’s chapter book, Scary Spring: Our Polio Fright of 1955, author C.A. Hartnell seeks to bring the spirit of the ‘50s alive for elementary school-age readers. The events are seen through the eyes of 11-year-old Carol-Ann and her friend Pete, whose adventures in their neighborhood are a mix of classic youthful mischief (finding a stray puppy, spying on the local “crabby old man”) to more serious themes like witnessing the dangerous consequences of hot rod racing and facing the realities of polio. Pete and Carol-Ann’s friendship is a good old-fashioned coming of age buddy adventure.
