How to Get the Most Out of Your PR/Marketing Firm

So you’ve hired a PR/marketing firm, and you’re eager to see your company shine like the sun — great! But have you really fulfilled your end of the deal to ensure this is even tangible? What many businesses don’t realize is that in order to really get the bang for the buck with a PR/marketing firm, you have to equip the firm with tools and resources that will allow them to succeed in providing your business with lucrative results.

“So many businesses hire firms with the belief that they can just toss them the keys and call it a day,” explains Jennifer Vickery, President of National Strategies Public Relations (NSPR). “What they don’t realize is that working with a public relations or marketing firm is a partnership, not simply a service.”

Here are three fantastic tips that will ensure businesses get the most out of their firm:

Create a PR/Marketing Time Slot

Keep up with what your firm is working on. We know you’re busy, but having a time slot for yourself ensures approvals in an efficient manner; otherwise you could be wasting your time and money. We want you to be growing your business. Set aside even 5 to 15 minutes of PR and Marketing reviews in your day and you will be surprised as to the outcome that your firm can accomplish with your help.

Keep on Track with Regular Meetings

We all know how endless meetings can be unproductive. However, consider holding shorter bi-weekly meetings to get everyone on the same page and keep your firm working hard for you. There’s nothing like communicating results regularly, and meetings are a great platform for just that. Plus, it keeps your firm accountable for continuous progress.

Tell Them Everything

Talk to your firm about the good, the bad and the ugly. Make sure they understand if sales are dipping or conversely if revenue is growing. It is important to them to be able to measure results, plan accordingly, make reactive changes to your strategy and stay in the loop of the overall view of your organization.

“It’s amazing how a few simple methods can make the world of a difference,” says Vickery.

The Problem Is...

A lot of smaller start ups just don’t have the budget to accommodate a PR agency. You have to shell out lots of money before you see results. That can even be weeks, months and maybe years. I’ve seen a lot of clients drop expensive PR agencies because of this. A lot expect instant results. That just rarely happens these days.
