A 32-year veteran of AmericasMart in Atlanta, Larry Lucas, of Larry Lucas Inc., knows firsthand the multitude of challenges store owners face. He recently presented a decidedly informative Retail Management seminar at the Atlanta Gift Show in which he highlighted the “must knows” and “must haves” to survive in the gift boutique business in today’s economy and beyond. The Giggle Guide® is happy to share some insightful highlights from Larry Lucas’ excellent seminar.

Baby bodysuits, or one-pieces, have become a staple in layette and infant collections. One-pieces are ever-popular because they make it a snap to dress and diaper little ones, and they stay put on even the wiggliest of babies. Most romper basics with snap closure convenience can be quite plain, so design becomes a major selling point for retailers and customers who appreciate apparel with an aesthetic appeal. A singular sensation in the one-piece biz is Simple Syrup, a baby clothing company who offers artsy bodysuits inspired by the sketchbook of Danielle Duer.

Football players aren’t the only ones with fumbling problems! Anyone that throws a mobile phone in a purse, backpack or pocket knows the frustration of fumbling around to catch a call. Now, this problem can be easily tackled with the Phubby™, a new way to carry a cell phone that eliminates “phumbling” (phone fumbling). Inspired by the hidden pouch characteristic of marsupials, South Mill Design, LLC has created a fashionable, practical collection of cell carriers that make it easy to catch every call.

Faster than a speeding scooter, more powerful than the Powderpuff Girls, and able to leap over tall teeter-totters in a single bound, today’s girls play harder than ever! Unfortunately, all the tumbling and tree-climbing can be rough on clothing and tender knees. Enter Züpers to the rescue! Züpers padded, ultra strong, stylish leggings do double duty, protecting legs while looking super hip and fashionable to boot.

American families are busier than ever, so it’s often long after the groceries are unpacked that mom or dad realize they forgot to replace the toothbrushes… again! Help them out by placing kid’s toothbrushes near the checkout. Specialty retailers may brush off this idea as inappropriate for their product mix, but unique toothbrushes from Live-Right, Benedent Corporation, Dr. Fresh and Preserve are exceptional finds that make customers smile! Dentists recommend that toothbrushes be changed every 3 months, so dental care products, especially those with impulse-buy appeal, can be a great way to brighten profits.

With the family movie “Tooth Fairy” opening this week, we’re pleased to present a Green Scene gleam on the best natural toothpastes for kids. Mainstream toothpastes are often chock full of artificial ingredients and flavors, and knowledgeable parents are searching for healthier alternatives. It’s only natural to turn to toothpastes by Tom’s of Maine, Burt’s Bees, and Weleda. These winning products are made with safe, flavorful ingredients found in nature, so they promote healthy teeth and smiles without exposing children to artificial additives. The Tooth Fairy is surely waving her wand in approval!

Still a child, not yet a young woman – those awkward tween years are momentous for girls. Their personalities are maturing along with their bodies. Their sense of style is influenced by the media, the Internet, celebrities and peers. Pivotal changes in tweenagers are reflected in their speech, actions, hobbies and clothing choices. There are several terrific fashion brands who recognize that tweens are growing up, and emphasize designs with an age-appropriate balance. JK Tees, Havengirl, T2Love and Claesen’s USA do a great job celebrating young tween spirits with their fashion collections.

Julie Barger isn’t your run of-the-mill mama; she’s a creative mastermind! As the stay-at-home mother of two little girls, she spent her days in search of ways to let her creative mind thrive, while tackling day-to-day parenting tasks. Knowing how competitive schoolyard fashion can be, Barger sought fresh and exciting ideas to keep her girls ahead of the trends without breaking the bank. She began by applying recycled and vintage materials to her girls’ jeans for a truly cutting-edge look. Her creations were soon the envy of the schoolyard, which encouraged her to take the next step.
