Chick-a-Dee Smoke Detector Chirps Warning
Today’s DIY home decorator has been stuck with lackluster eyesores as smoke detectors, until now. The Chick-a-Dee smoke detector has flown into the design world with safety from the tip of its beak to the end of its plastic tail.
In early days, miners entering unknown mine territory took along beautiful caged birds to determine air quality and keep themselves safe. Current smoke detectors serve homeowners well in safety measures, but fail to complement home décor and just emit strident blasts. Utilitarian smoke alarms have become yet another functional item to limit space and design opportunities.
When fire meets form meets function, the Chick-a-Dee smoke detector was hatched as the winning design out of fifty industrial entries in a Union of Dutch Insurance Companies contest in the Netherlands. Calling this delightful bird design and its call a smoke detector is a bit of an understatement. Instead of the blaring siren echoing through homes, the phonetic and more-dulcet Chick-a-Dee tones escalate from chick-a-dee to dee-dee-dee. It tweeted its way to a win in the prestigious industry design contest with its design inspired by an actual bird, the American Black-capped Chickadee.
Where there’s smoke, there’s fire (and color). Able to accent and protect homes, the Chick-a-Dee smoke detector is available in a variety of hues including white, black/white, green, rose, blue and black. While the function and protection are represented in this stationary flightless bird, families can enjoy the early warning that allows them to take flight from their homes, ahead of damaging smoke and fire. Its design features sleek lines and mid-century retro-styling.
Like the children the Chick-a-Dee can protect, good things come in small packages. The Louise van der Veld designed smoke detector measures just 4.75” high, 4.75” wide and 6.75” inches deep to keep families safe while adding a fun, designer touch. In normal, everyday circumstances, a light flashes once a minute and the detector can be tested with a simple button push.
