Kahiniwalla Products Have a Story to Tell

All across the world, there are artists who are dedicated to their craft, turning out fresh and amazing creations every day. Unfortunately, many of these talented people won’t ever have the chance to have their work recognized beyond their small towns and villages because they don’t have access to the tools that would help them build a brand and a wider following.

It’s challenging enough to make it as an artist or business owner in the developed world, where resources for success are plentiful; those living in developing countries may not even realize that they have the potential to make a livable wage doing what they do, and may not know where to begin to reach a larger audience. Recognizing this fact, some companies in the U.S. have made an effort to reach out to artists around the globe, to help them become established in their craft and ensure that they’re paid fairly for their work. The market for “fair trade” products has grown over the past decade as more people realize the potential of the global economy.

Kahiniwalla is one of the companies taking part in this revolution. Kahiniwalla offers children’s’ rattles, toys and blankets, as well as adult jewelry through their international crafts-people.

Pebble, a Bangladesh-based company that distributes their products through Kahiniwalla, specializes in toys and rattles made from soft, organic cotton. The rattles and toys have a unique, old-fashioned look and are safe and earth-friendly. They come in a multitude of fun shapes, including people, dragons, ice cream cones, donuts and more. In addition to these toys, Pebble also offers adorable hats and blankets for babies and children.

Pebble was founded by Samantha Morshed, a Brit with connections in Bangladesh. Samantha knew of many local craftspeople – mostly women struggling to make a living – who had the talent to be part of a business endeavor, so she organized them to form Hathay Bunano, the company that makes Pebble products. The goal was to make Pebble products available to a U.S. and European market, and with the help of Kahiniwalla, the dream became a reality.

“Kahiniwalla” means “storyteller,” and the company hopes that each of its products uncovers a unique story about its origins and about the people who pour their skills, passions and hopes into creating them. Kahiniwalla plans to add more businesses from around the globe to its roster of contributors, so that they have a truly international panel of talent and a wide range of products to offer customers in years to come.
