Kallio Set to Open Community WorkSHOP in Brooklyn

The understanding of waste in our garments is growing, and customers are starting to ask about the origin of their wardrobe. Kallio started as a consciously-minded kidswear brand out of Brooklyn, NY. After working in the fashion industry, Karina Kallio saw firsthand how much waste there was. Roughly 85% of textile waste ends up in landfills, enough material to recreate the Rocky Mountains. Kallio offers a respite from that reality by repurposing men’s shirts into unexpected modern classics that are wearable and delightful.

Kallio is all about local, including sourcing high-quality fabrics that are hand cut in their Brooklyn studio. Each garment in Kallio’s collections are sewn by a women’s cooperative in the historic Garment District.

Now, Kallio is taking the next step to provide anyone with simple, beautiful ways to engage in conscious design and living — and pay it forward in support of the community and other sustainable brands. They just wrapped up a Kickstarter campaign to fund the Kallio WorkSHOP, the first consciously-minded retail outlet and workshop studio in Brooklyn.

Not only will the space be the new home and headquarters of Kallio, but it will also host designer pop-ups and workshops. The space will host like-minded brands through monthly pop-ups, bringing an exciting array of apparel, jewelry, housewares and more. The workshops will focus on artists and designers and will teach simple and sustainable design techniques, including urban gardening and re-imaging vintage. Stepping outside the clothing comfort zone, training sessions will also focus on food styling and photography.

Rewards for support are the kind of items you can proudly hang in your shop. The super-urban Sleeve Pants are one of the most popular items in Kallio’s collection. These drop-crotch pants are available in baby and toddler sizes and come in Poplin, Indigo and Flannel.

Kids can stay warm and stylish in the Kallio Dress that comes in tank, kimono and long-sleeve tunic styles to cover all seasons. Head over to Kallio for their trendy hoodies. You won’t see these in department stores and no matter which style you carry, fall will be fantastic in these upcycled items.
