I am looking forward to attending the ABC Spring Educational Conference at South Point, Las Vegas on May 7-9. After attending so many trade events over the last 30+ years, I enjoy learning more about the children’s business, and especially seeing new things that may take me by surprise. The ABC SEC is one event that allows buyers, manufacturers, reps and media to get to know more about each other. The element of surprise is always part of new experiences. That’s why I asked several exhibitors these questions: “What would someone be surprised to know about you?” and “What will buyers be surprised to see in your 2013 line?”

Display your customer savviness with products that add personality to children’s rooms. Anyone can carry lamps and lighting fixtures, but only Wall Sticker Lamp can make 3D lamps. Made of vinyl, the stickers come in fun styles featuring animals, places and flowers. As unique as a tattoo, Tatutina lets customers organize keepsakes and crafts with beautifully painted recipe boxes and whimsical, wooden crayon caddies. The sure cure for the summertime blues, Win Green playhouses let kids enter into their favorite fairy tale or sea adventure without having to leave the yard. Modern Moose takes a contemporary approach to the simple things in life with clocks and wall art featuring clever laser-cut characters.

Everyone is in on the emerging mustache trend — even kids and women! The hippest and happiest youngsters will love the Wry Baby Snapsuit featuring a joke about the mustache’s return to fashion. Your brightest customers will take a shine to the clever disguise SunStaches sunglasses, including vampire and geek sub-trends. Given how fast trends can change, temporary might be the answer. StacheTATS will deliver on the craze without having to go crazy with a razor. Neon Eaters also joins the party with their stache-festooned socks for youngsters.

If today’s business environment seems to be challenging, imagine being a young woman starting a business very shortly after gaining the right to vote in your homeland. The Roaring 20s were host to powerful men at the helms of companies, but a woman-owned business was somewhat of a rarity. This didn’t deter the vision of one woman, Madame Beatrice Alexander: her desire to create beautiful, quality dolls carried the Alexander Doll Company forward into the next century as a powerhouse in fine dolls and accessories. Now celebrating its 90th year in operation, Madame Alexander has spread joy to thousands of little girls, while generously supporting various philanthropic causes.

Many popular brands provide unique products that meet customer needs in grand style. In today’s shrinking world, that means an emphasis on understanding a multi-cultural audience. But that focus should not mean a generic approach to product creation. For example, Gryphon Design Collective has its fingers on the world’s pulse and understands the demands of a global marketplace — with insight into satisfying the needs of individuals. Not only does Gryphon bring in talent from dozens of countries, but it also gives back through literacy initiatives and promoting community issues.

Sisters Krystal Kirkpatrick and Suzanne Knutson started their company, Bunnies By The Bay, as therapy after two tragic fishing accidents claimed the lives of their father, brother, uncle, cousin, and 11 other fishermen. Suffering almost unbearable grief, they took the advice of their grandmother to keep their hands busy and began sewing bunnies that were inspired by a childhood story. Bunnies By The Bay’s focus is on creating delightfully endearing gifts for little ones embarking on their first year of life. Through engaging art and playful wit, Bunnies By The Bay offers detailed designs and lush materials in timeless products that promise parents and grandparents a cherished heirloom in the years to come.

A benefit of a global economy is that stores can offer beautiful and unique items from beyond their own borders. Having this kind of reach means you can be the hero for parents and gift-buyers by offering something nobody else can get. In apples-to-apples comparison, England-based Apples to Pears offers the cutest gifts, complete with their own decorative tin packaging (no need to wrap!). Tablets can be cushioned from child-like blows with tabCoosh direct from Australia. The Scottish can be so eloquent with adorable 2D and 3D gallery frames from The Articulate Gallery. From France, TAPIKID playmats by DEUZ stimulate imaginations to fuel the fun.

The middle school and high school years are busy, exciting, and stressful. Children are beginning to come into their own; they develop their own personal styles and become increasingly individualistic. Even if you don’t usually stock craft projects in your store, you will want to consider the power of Book Blingz. Many schools require students to cover their textbooks to help preserve the integrity of the book and cut costs (clean, covered books last longer and save tax dollars). Book Blingz provides everything a tween or teen needs to construct a personalized book cover in a variety of styles and colors.

Sometimes a loved one is far away and a simple picture just isn’t reminder enough. Or maybe you just need to offer a more personalized gift for special occasions. Sure, there are standard recordable cards and books on the market that allow them to hear a familiar voice, but with no context. Now people can let the frame tell the story all on its own. Pictures truly are worth 1,000 words (assuming you can say that many in 10 seconds) with Chatterbox, a recordable picture frame that allows customers to record messages that can last forever, even when the picture changes.

The great thing about offering home, lifestyle and gift items in your store is that most can be displayed without regard to time or season. To ensure they are a selection of new products, buyers will swarm the New York International Gift Fair® January 26-30. Drawing an estimated 35,000 attendees from all 50 states and 80+ countries, the NYIGF is produced twice annually. Held in January and August in New York City, the Fair hosts about 2,800 exhibiting companies showcasing brands across the home, lifestyle and gift spectrum. The Giggle Guide® has culled the list of exhibitors to preview a selection of interesting children’s items, including Zipit, Pure Play Kids, Greenpoint Brands and Buzzworthy Baby.
