Tortle Lends a Helping Hat

The early days of a baby’s life are filled with so many things to be concerned about. Parents want to choose the right feeding method, clothing, and skin products. They also want to create the safest, healthiest environment for their baby to sleep. Experts agree that babies should sleep on their backs for the first several months of life in order to reduce the chances of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

While back sleeping helps prevent a major danger it can sometimes lead to or exacerbate a lesser-known but significant problem. Some infants suffer from what is commonly called Flat Head Syndrome. Just as the name implies, this syndrome causes the baby’s head to be flat in the back; long stretches of back-sleeping can make it worse. Experts advocate tummy time, but sometimes this isn’t enough or isn’t applicable because the baby has health issues that limit mobility.

Enter the Tortle Head Repositioning Beanie, a unique type of head-wear that’s made specifically to counteract Flat Head Syndrome and other minor to moderate head positioning problems in infants. It’s a cap that looks much like an everyday infant cap, but it has a strategically placed cushioned area that helps to gently influence the baby’s skull and neck development over time. It’s available in 4 cute colors and is comfortable for a baby to wear. The Tortle has been used in hospitals and other medical facilities with good results and can also be used by parents at home.

The Tortle was designed by pediatric neonatologist and mother of four, Jane Scott. Dr. Scott developed the Tortle based on her work with ailing and premature infants. She wanted to create a product that could be used in conjunction with methods like tummy time and physical therapy to treat a baby’s head and neck positioning problems efficiently.

In addition to Flat Head Syndrome, the Tortle can also help address a condition called torticollis. Torticollis refers to an imbalance of the baby’s neck muscles that often causes the child’s head to be turned too much in one direction or another. The Tortle comes with instructions for use for torticollis as well as for Flat Head Syndrome. Dr. Scott makes two versions of the Tortle; one that is sold to hospitals and medical professionals and one that is available to the general public.
