Boppy is a Classic with a New Style

It’s comfortable, it’s cuddly, it’s convenient and a classic… it even reached pop culture status by appearing on an episode of Friends. It’s Boppy, one of the most popular baby products of all time.

Is there anyone in the baby biz that doesn’t know that the Boppy is a soft, uniquely-shaped pillow designed to provide a comfy, supportive cradle for a baby’s delicate head and neck, making it easier for a parent to hold and feed the infant? This simple yet revolutionary invention has become a household name in the last 23 years, and the company is now poised to serve a whole new generation of moms with fresh designs and styles.

Colorado resident Susan Brown founded The Boppy Company in 1989. She was a working mom with a child in daycare when the idea for the Boppy came out of the blue. The daycare coordinator had asked the parents to bring in pillows to help the young babies in the daycare to sit upright. Susan brought in a C-shaped pillow, and to the delight of the other parents, it ended up being the perfect shape to comfortably prop up a young child. After several months of development, a few business loans and some good old-fashioned ingenuity, Susan’s new company was off and running.

The Boppy ended up being a boon to nursing moms, a function which Susan hadn’t initially considered. By the 1980s, the breastfeeding movement of the 70s had gone mainstream, and many moms new to breastfeeding found that the Boppy eliminated much of the arm exhaustion that’s a common part of the experience. These days, many nursing coaches and midwives recommend the Boppy to their clients and patients.

Early Boppy users may remember the pillows’ loud color-splash from the early 90s, but things have changed a lot since then. Boppy pillows – as well as some of their other products – now come in a variety of classy and classic colors and prints, and slipcovers are available to change the looks and for easy cleaning, too.

Boppy offers a full line of supportive pillow products as well as pillow covers. The line includes products not just for babies, but for pregnant moms as well. In addition to the original C-shaped nursing/cuddling pillow, there’s also a supportive belly pillow and a full-body pillow for those months when an expectant mother’s expanding belly might make for uncomfortable nights. There’s also a line of travel products, play gyms, tee shirts and more.
