Naaya by Moonlight Makes Sweet Dreams a Reality

Blankets for babies and children do much more than provide warmth and decoration; these cozy items often become treasured keepsakes that are passed down from generation to generation. Of course, if a blanket is going to enjoy heirloom status, it should meet certain criteria. First, it should be unique. A mass-produced discount store blanket can definitely hold emotional value, and it’s often the child’s choice of favorite “blankie” that stands the test of time, but most parents would prefer that a special blanket be aesthetically pleasing and well-made. Naaya by Moonlight creates a luxury collection of child’s quilts created to last a lifetime.

The Naaya line consists of soft, eco-friendly, 100% cotton quilts. The quilts are designed using the ancient art of hand block printing, but have a clean, simple modern look. They come in a range of color combinations and prints featuring cute animal characters. Because the quilts are light yet dense, they’re perfect for both colder and warmer weather, and they come with their own attractive tote bags, making them easy to take just about anywhere.

Creator Chaandni Singh found her inspiration for the Naaya collection while she herself was still a child. As a Canadian with roots in India, Singh enjoyed traveling with her family to her ancestral home. While there, she encountered a certain type of quilt and immediately fell in love with its light weight and strong yet soft texture. Years later, as a new mom to her son Ayaan, Chaandni’s memories of the quilts came flooding back and she decided she wanted to make her own updated version of those childhood comforts.

Her company story describes the process as being challenging. “Eschewing traditional paisley and Indian motifs, Singh desired sweet, simple images. Her designs had to be hand-carved on a wooden block to create a stamp, which created the pattern and then the pattern needed to be transferred correctly. Additionally, because cotton tends to cluster and ball up unevenly, creating a quilt completely uniform in weight was a challenge –– not even Singh’s childhood quilts had that consistency.”

Rejecting samples half a dozen times, Singh laughs that she “drove the craft workers crazy.” But patience, persistence and her eye for quality paid off.
