Economy Schmonomy
So this is my first blog entry, and instead of writing about the industry, per se, I decided to write about freaking out, and then calming down.
I went to a women’s conference recently where a very amazing speaker spoke of all of the things happening in the world-ozone layer depleting, war, poverty, political figures rising and falling, some of whom threaten to use this or that bomb… and honestly, it’s become a bit overwhelming. For our industry, it’s CPSC or CPSIA or market trends and stocks rising/falling. Watching the 11pm news is taking a toll on the anxiety button in our heads, and causing many people to surrender to medications (or uhm hum… margaritas, wine… oh, maybe that’s just me?) to calm down. It all seems like it’s a bit over our heads…
What was she talking about anyway??
No need to be driven by fear to get over a bump in the road
Well, as Billy Joel sang-We didn’t start the fire-it was always burning since the world’s been turning. He was talking about a catalog of events that happened during his lifetime-a lot of things happened (have you ever been able to fully sing the lyrics to that song??) But we survived then, and we’ll survive now. The past 20 years have been good to us-not too much to freak out about, stable economy, and we were living pretty comfortably here in the US. But living comfortably doesn’t necessarily mean we were living well… and now we have a little bump in the road. Beyond the fact that media amplifies everything, bumps in the road happen, and we just need to relax. Being so fear driven is not good for our bodies or our minds, and change is actually a good thing. Empowering businesses to make better decisions, being accountable for their actions, becoming more than environmentally aware-but living organic/environmentally friendly, learning to be frugile, cooking at home, exercising more, etc… these are amazing things!!!
Little changes can make a big impact
Each of us has but a vapor of time (in the grand scheme of things-don’t freak out and look at your watch), to do what we’re meant to do, and be who we’re supposed to be. Yes we’re all in this together, but being globally aware is a great thing. Instead of being driven by fear, we should be motivated by each achievement & how our little changes now will make a bigger impact in the future. Instead of negative thoughts, we need to be focusing on positive ways to move forward. Success is imminent-and we have to make sure we’re ready for it!
So… while next time I’ll write about the showroom, my dogs, then wedding planning, & lighter subjects, I had to share this one.
Ciao for now,

We ARE in this together!
Thanks for sharing your motivational message with The Giggle Guide™. It is helpful to read postivive thoughts, and to be reminded that we are all in this together. At The Giggle Guide™, I believe we are building a community within the children’s industry where we can all learn from and encourage each other. Retailers, manufacturers, sales reps, trade show event organizers, and service providers can all benefit from an appreciation of our co-dependent business relationships and a spirit of cooperation.
Thanks for the reminder.

Thanks Brandi for the great blog!
It helps to, every once in a while, be reminded, to put things into perspective.
Like, the other day I was driving with my kids on our way to catch a ferry, to visit friends on Whidbey Island (we live in Seattle) and I thought, that I took a wrong exit. I panicked, saying shoot, shoot, shoot, over and over, and looked for a way to turn back around. My 5 year-old daughter very calmly said; “you know mommy, panicking doesn’t solve anything, if you just stay calm, you’ll figure it out.” She had heard this on a kid’s show she viewed earlier in the week and her timing to share that piece of wisdom was perfect! Since I wasn’t totally sure that I had actually taken the wrong exit, I decided to drive to the first light to check. It turned out that I took the right exit after all.
For me, it was also a good reminder that sometimes, we spend so much time worrying about the end result, that we lose sight of just enjoying the process of getting there in the first place. We did get to the island and we did have an amazing time with our friends, AND the time we spent getting there was truly a joy!
All my best,
Julia
