When Sand is a Beach, Sand Gone Cleans Up!

A trip to the beach with her daughter gave Tiffany Smith a wave of creative inspiration that turned the tide for a new product and business. Like her previous experiences after seaside outings, it was very difficult to clean sand from her little girl’s body and clothing to prevent a car full of the gritty residue that would eventually find its way back to her home. To combat the ongoing challenge, Smith invented Sand Gone — a special blend of all-natural, non-toxic talcum powders that easily remove sand without the need for water.

“Sand Gone is unique,” says Smith, pointing out the limited number of similar products. “I conducted a lot of R&D to test its feel and use before bringing it to market.” To complement the removal properties of the talc, she added a mild hint of coconut fragrance to Sand Gone to delight users’ senses and to remind them of a tropical paradise. While typically used to clean up after time on the beach, the product works equally well after a day spent fishing, boating or playing in the sandbox. It also effectively removes salt so that skin feels fresh and clean.

Retailing for $12.95 for an 8-ounce jar, Sand Gone comes with a microfiber applicator that secures to users’ hands with a strap as they apply the powder. Smith currently uses social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to market Sand Gone. She also demonstrates its effectiveness as a regular volunteer with Surfers for Autism, an organization whose athletes benefit greatly from the product.

Sand Gone was recently selected as one of the top three products out of more than 200 entrants in the 2010 “Next Big Thing” contest, an annual competition at the Dallas Market Center that recognizes brilliant ideas. More than 50,000 expo visitors had the opportunity to learn about the wonder working talc over the five-day competition. The event inspired Smith to continue to work hard to bring Sand Gone to the attention of an even larger audience. “This is my baby, my passion,” she says, “and members of my family are my biggest fans.”
