Circus 212 Takes Center Ring

New York City’s area code, 212, is one of the best known in the world. Those who have the privilege of living or working there get to be part of more exciting, inspiring, and groundbreaking experiences than you’ll find almost anywhere else on the planet. There’s so much art, food, music, knowledge and attitude inside so few square miles, it can be amazing, but it also may be a little overwhelming. Children growing up in New York have access to famous museums, art galleries, and theaters, not to mention great parks and playgrounds. In a way, the spirit of New York is very well suited to kids because, like childhood, it is full of energy and curiosity and built on the belief that anything is possible.

One thing that New York kids are known for is their undeniable sense of style. Go to any New York park, children’s event or even the famous FAO Schwartz toy store and you’ll see the youngsters there rocking a wide variety of distinctive styles. There isn’t necessarily one “New York style”; creative parents often help their children build eclectic and fashionable wardrobes built out of pieces from different sources. It’s not unusual to see elements of urban wear preppy, Victorian, ethnic, and classic all in the same room, and sometimes even on the same kid! Just because there isn’t one definitive New York look, it doesn’t mean nobody has tried to establish a certain Big Apple aesthetic.

Circus 212 is a clothing company that’s shaping the kids’ fashion scene in NYC. One glance at this brand and you’ll immediately pick up the NY vibe. It’s hip and a bit edgy, but with a sense of humor. It’s all about taking a classic style and adding flourishes that make it stand out from the crowd. Old stand-bys like comfy cotton tees get a makeover with a screen-printed tuxedo front or stylized x-ray pictures of bones and lungs. Hoodies are also a big seller because while they’re comfy and cozy they don’t take away from a kid’s coolness cred. Circus 212’s hoodies are made of luxurious French terry, making them some of the softest around.

The brand is the handwork of designer Gigi Leung, whose visionary spirit has helped launch a number of art and advertising projects. In addition to running her own company, Gi-Space Design, her other accomplishments include being named as Sotheby’s Vice President of Design and Creative Services North America. If her work at Circus 212 is any indication, we’re likely to see a lot more from this up-and-comer.
