“Girls Will Be” Promotes All That Girls Can Be
By Emmi Kern
T-shirts are classic wardrobe staples that can be worn for school or playtime; they can even be dressed up with some nice accessories to be worn for fancier occasions. Most kids wear T-shirts frequently, but unfortunately it’s not always easy for girls to find T-shirts that fit them properly. While boys’ tees tend to run a bit larger than their labeled size and generally have a standard fit, girls tees are more likely to vary in size and cut, usually running smaller and tighter. Girls tees marketed as “cool” or stylish usually feature a form-fitting cut and cap sleeves, neither of which is always desirable for young girls (or their parents). Sayings and images are the other aspects of girls T-shirts that commonly raise concerns among parents. Many times, the sayings on girls’ shirts are not very original and they conform to gender stereotypes; words like “Diva,” “Princess” and “Spoiled” are among the popular offerings, and accompanying images tend to include themes of glamour, celebrity, shopping, etc. Of course, not all girls identify with these themes, and even among those who do, many would like to have other options for the sake of variety and to express their other interests.
Girls Will Be was built on the belief that T-shirts for girls should be every bit as comfortable, well-fitting and durable as those for boys. Their line of shirts is designed to provide good coverage without being oversized or boxy; they also sport sayings that foster healthy self-image and a positive outlook on life. They encourage girls to be awesome, bold and unique. There are shirts that reflect interest in sports, pets, bugs, and airplanes, too. In addition to shirts, they also offer a few different styles of shorts. These shorts are made to fit modestly, so they’re not too short or tight to wear during active play.
Girls Will Be is a family business headed by Sharon Burns Choksi, a business and marketing consultant and mother of two. Her daughter Maya and niece Grace were the inspiration for Girls Will Be. Also on the team are Sharon’s sister Laura Burns (Grace’s mom), who specializes in the company’s branding and web design, and their brother David Burns, who designs the company’s T-shirt images.
