Shoeglits Tie Shoes with Fun Fashion
By Laura Vaillancourt
Sometimes the simplest ideas become the most successful. When Lori Cohen’s 6-year-old daughter put on a pair of sneakers that were slightly too big she suggested putting something in the eyelets to make them tighter. “That night Shoeglits came to me in my sleep. I woke up and made my first prototype,” states Cohen. Originally the products were designed for girls ages 5-10 who wanted to “jazz up their sneakers.” Now the brand is growing to include boys, teens and moms. Cohen attributes the success of Shoeglits to the fact that the product is “super cute and functional.” Shoeglits started in Cohen’s basement with everything from designing, sourcing, and manufacturing to selling done by Cohen herself. As things started to grow, she looked for help. She soon stumbled upon Geoffrey Slick at Slick Designs in Harleysville, Pennsylvania who has helped with the designing of the website, packaging and display. He continues to serve as Cohen’s go-to mentor whenever unforeseen challenges arrive.
As things have continued to grow, manufacturing by herself has become too much, and Cohen now works with John Sgombick at Metro Pack in Newburgh, NY who assembles and packages everything for her. But she hasn’t forgotten where she came from; Cohen still fills the orders from her basement on a daily basis.
The company has gained popularity and grown tremendously from its early days. Currently they produce three designs in 5 to 7 colors each: flowers, smiley faces, and peace signs.
Cohen will be showing Shoeglits at The ENK Children’s Club in NYC in August. For more information, visit www.shoeglits.com
