Velvet Moustache Offers a Cast of Characters

A few years ago, Majorie Labrèque Lepage was asked to sew a stuffed toy for a friend’s new arrival. At once, she received copious praise from everyone for her furry creation. She soon realized the joy she felt for creating these unique creatures. As a daughter of an entrepreneur, she could not help but start her own business –– Velvet Moustache.

Velvet Moustache has a number of lines, including cushions, soft toys and fashion. The cushions are square-shaped animal and people-like characters with wide eyes and over-sized ears. Their furry fabric makes them a great accessory for beds and playrooms. Creations include a raccoon, mouse, shark, clown, ballerina, hippo and hedgehog. The designs are androgynous. The soft toys are smaller versions of the cushions, along with modernistic plush toys. For fashion accessories, Velvet Moustache has hats and neck warmers for kids age 3 months to 7 years. Also included in the fashion line are sleeping masks and temporary tattoos.

Assistant Designer, Ariane Valade, describes the unique design process, “It was time to create creatures that we love. We analyze each detail and share our ideas with people around us.” Their inspiration can stem from anywhere. Valade continues, “Our friends are part of the inspiration because they help us to know what they like and what can function.”

Velvet Moustache has grown through a “slow couture” movement, as Valade states, “The company started with one pillow, then two, three, four… then five hundred.” Everything is thought, developed, sewn, inspected, brushed, labeled, and packaged in Montreal. Labrèque Lepage and Valade are still the only two in the workshop. They work tirelessly to grow the brand. Being so small and so tight-knit they have the chance to collaborate with the best fabrics manufacturers, seamstresses and a cutting enterprises in Montreal.

Valade says the top sellers include the Owl, Sheep, Panda, Fox and Pug cushions. Of course, Labrèque Lepage and Valade , personally love them all.
