Julie Barger isn’t your run of-the-mill mama; she’s a creative mastermind! As the stay-at-home mother of two little girls, she spent her days in search of ways to let her creative mind thrive while tackling day-to-day parenting tasks. Adorable sock monkey faces used as appliqués were soon accompanied by the tube ends used as cozy double sleeves. Crushed vintage velvet and embroidery were used to add a some funk to the designs, while the special details she added to each piece exhibited her labor of love.

Today, Morfs are hand sewn by a team of enthusiastic stay-at-home moms, including Barger herself, who pride themselves on quality, attention to detail, and fair wages for great work. The Morf line is based on the notion that things that change are beautiful, like butterflies which undergo metamorphosis to change from a caterpillar to become a delicate fairy-like creature with wings. Morf designs are “morfed,” using recycled and “up-cycled” materials. The idea is to take these mundane discarded items and turn them into something spectacular — with huge market appeal.

Barger looks for ultra-soft cotton and other unique textiles at second-hand stores and vintage shops to help create her products which appeal to children, their peers, and parents alike. Her unique recycled creations even sparked the interest of a buyer from Sesame Street. Soon thereafter, rights to the characters children have loved for 40 years were released to Morfs fashions. The licensing deal enabled this design guru, and fun-loving mother, to achieve financial freedom she never dreamed possible when she first began.

Today, Barger’s creations are hitting the market with full force, and because of their modern fashion appeal, are being received with wild enthusiasm.
