Glob Makes Paints that Don’t Taint

The rise in allergies and food sensitivities has had a dramatic impact on the landscape of families and fun time. Gone are the days when classroom cupcakes were the norm and children painted (themselves and everything else) with whatever was handy. Gluten-sensitive children are warned to avoid popular kids’ products like commercially-produced play-dough. Juvenile skin has been shown to be particularly sensitive to chemical irritants. And many families have found that going for a different diet, like vegetarian or vegan, is more than just a lifestyle choice: it’s a necessity.

Glob founder Ashley Phelps understands sensitivities. As an artist, she suffered through skin irritation from paints, but just bore the trouble as part of her trade. However, life was about to get better: a friend who was developing a house paint from plants inspired her to investigate new, safe ways to color her world. She started Glob, and has been helping families with her non-toxic, environmentally-positive products ever since.

Glob products go a step beyond being beautiful and food-based. Every aspect of the products, from brushes to packaging, has been carefully developed to be people-friendly and sustainable. Glob brush fibers are constructed from Taklon, a soft (but durable) polyester fiber that is devoid of animal products or allergens. This makes the brushes particularly attractive to customers who have sensitivities. Colors are gluten-free and conform to the latest safety standards for toxicity. Glob paint colors are like the vibrant occupants of the produce aisle: plum, tangerine, and basil are just some of the hues. The paints also boast a pleasant aroma that helps engage the senses. PCW (post consumer waste) packaging ensures that the products are totally low-impact.

The Glob Paint Kit is the rockstar in the company’s stellar line-up. The kit comes with 6 different colors (lemon verbena, berry, pomegranate, tangerine, plum, and basil), cups with compostable lids, and two bamboo/Taklon brushes. Customers get to mix the paints according to their own desired thickness, and each individual paint packet can make two ounces of color. The colors can be used for regular brush painting and finger painting, or can be rolled into homemade play-dough for extra fun.

Face painting is a big trend at community events and school fun fairs. Glob’s Natural Face Paints are strong sellers (these would also be great for girls’ sleepovers, class parties, and birthdays). The kits include five colors and a bamboo applicator. Just in time for spring are the popular Natural Easter Egg Coloring kits. These kits include three colors made from cabbage, annatto, and radish, and three bamboo brushes (enough pigment for 1-2 dozen eggs). Glob also produces sets of bamboo brushes, brush holders, keepsake gift bags, watercolor prints, and wood painting kits.
