The Magnificent Sprinkles Light Up Kids’ Lives
“Instead of cursing the darkness, light a candle.” –– Ben Franklin
You don’t need to read the newspaper everyday to know that kids are growing up in a pretty tough world. Add to that the complication of children not being able to process information in a reasonable way. Kids have their own way of looking at their environment, in large part due to their imaginations. For example, in the child’s mind, the terror of the monster in the closet might have been a cute character from a comic book when the lights were on — but now it has changed into a grim ghoul (a transformation which always seems to occur at 3 am).
Families have been challenged by children’s fears, and more than one parent has spent the night sitting up next to an anxious child’s bed. But now parents have a new champion: Vicki Sewell, author and creator of The Magnificent Sprinkles (Pea Ridge Productions, LLC). Sewell just experienced a strong showing at the AmericasMart in Atlanta, where her plush critters and storybook garnered serious attention.
Strength, Courage, Compassion
“With so many concerns in the world today, I want to provide an opportunity for children to comfortably discuss their worries with parents or caregivers,” Sewell explains of her story and creatures. With a warm heart and a deep understanding of the kinds of terrors children face regularly, Sewell created an enchanting storybook and plush characters designed to keep the good feelings flowing. Illustrator Michael Swaim (Pibbin the Small) brings Sewell’s kind creatures to life with lively colors and a unique style. The Magnificent Sprinkles story is about positively influencing the youngest among us to face their fears and help them find comfort. The book is right on target: child psychologists recommend talking to children about their fears rather than dismissing them. But it’s sometimes hard for parents and caregivers to find a good time to discuss children’s fears (especially when they come at 3 am). The Magnificent Sprinkles provides a platform for those discussions with a positive, fun spin: “Every time a raindrop receives a magical kiss from the Rainbow, a Magnificent Sprinkle is born!”
Each Sprinkle tackles a different issue facing children and is “blessed with a special power to help children to be brave and strong.” SAM (he’s Strong And Mighty) is particularly directed towards overcoming terror. LACI (Love And Caring Incessantly) targets the sorrow that children can feel when they are lonely or missing someone they love. NEA (Never, Ever Alone) can help children overcome that empty feeling you get when you feel like you are the only one facing a difficult trial. CAZI (Catch And Zap Immediately) is sure to be a customer favorite. After all, parents and kids are certainly bound to sleep better with a friend who can eliminate those frightening closet monsters. The Sprinkles are so-named by Grandma Leah, who is a combination of wisdom, comfort, and old-fashioned kindness. The critters use “spin and song” to help children understand their fears in a safe, supportive manner.
Each plush Sprinkle is outfitted with a “power band” around the ankle and sports bright, rainbow-hued locks. They come in yellow, blue, pink, or green, and stand at 14” tall (the perfect size for little squeezes).
A keepsake gift set (with magnetic closures and choice of Sprinkle plush) or book (hard cover and soft cover) are available, as well as a Kindle edition. Mini versions of the Sprinkles make it easy to spread the power of positive thinking around, while the full-sized versions make the perfect huggable companions. The Magnificent Sprinkles plush creatures and book make great Valentine’s Day gifts, Easter presents, or something to have on hand when the kids visit grandma.
