Today, throughout our country, the machine tears away incessantly at nature, but in Harrisville the stream continues to flow as a perpetual reminder of those brief but exciting years when the machine and nature were working as one. Perhaps it is the persistent shadow of this organic relationship which still tempers the quality of life and form in Harrisville; it was certainly the relationship which once graced Lowell and, beyond that, England’s valley of the Stroud.
