Children's Club - New York, New York (3/6/11 - 3/8/11)

Produced four times a year, the ENK International Children’s Club in NYC in early March was a great success and positive spirits ran high. Both Stanley Kaye, Show Director for the Children’s Club, and Elyse Kroll, chairwoman and founder of ENK International, took it as a sign that the market is “bouncing back.” Floor traffic was steady and the variety of sellers both nationally and globally offered a lot to consider. March’s event included a runway fashion show sponsored by Vogue Bambini, with the models sporting back-to-school trends. The show introduced many newer players including: Malibu Sugar, Babysoy, Knitoes & Co., and Tuff Cookie.

Playtime New York - New York, New York (3/5/11 - 3/7/11)

All over the world, companies create products that make children’s lives more convenient, enriching, and fun. When companies come together in one place to display their best, they create a symbiotic buying experience for children’s retailers. Playtime New York is a trade show that presents a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere where buyers can get up close and personal with mainly European-based or inspired apparel, gifts and accessories. In March, Playtime New York unveiled unique and useful offerings from both established and emerging stars including jack & salma, kicokids, Sono Vaso, Noel France S.A.S. and Easy Peasy Shoes.

The children’s industry today moves at a feverish pace. Our endeavor to stay on top of all the latest trends keeps The Giggle Guide® in perpetual motion. Maybe that’s why we’re finding the new lines for autumn so refreshing! After attending recent trade events across the country, it appears that Fall 2011 fashions are reminiscent of a simpler time. Retailers have welcomed back-to-basics for back-to-school, with traditional clothing and quality construction made to last. Organic fabrics satisfy the desire for sustainability without sacrificing style, and beautifully muted tones provide a warm color palette. Fall for new fashions from Pale Cloud, Little Esop, Blu Pony Vintage, and Kiwi Industries.

Autumn is traditionally a season of change, and once again retailers are seeing significant shifts in children’s apparel trends for back-to-school. Just as autumn leaves show off magnificent colors, nature’s shades are echoed in fall’s fashions. Designers’ twists in organic cotton and cashmere are more prevalent. Mixed patterns and floral arrangements abound, as do simple, clean lines — all yielding a thematic trend toward nature-inspired looks in both color and construction. As the Fall 2011 buying season comes to full fruition, harvest a bountiful crop of the choicest apparel for your store from eyeSpy Baby, Million Polkadots, Bambeeno Cashmere and Right Bank Babies.

Who hasn’t longed for an adorable pet at some time in their life? Maybe a cuddly puppy or soft kitten to snuggle with — or even a scream-inducing lizard to frighten an older sister! The draw of pet ownership goes beyond youthful yearnings for something cute or cuddly. It speaks to the innermost nature of man, for whom sometimes the best companion is one of a different species. Peter Brown’s latest book, Children Make Terrible Pets, offers amusing and enlightening insight into pet ownership for children 3 to 8 years old, told through the eyes of an endearing and charming bear named Lucy.

Parents of children with allergies, or sensitivities to certain foods or substances, must stay vigilant. They have to read labels, eliminate triggering products, inform teachers and caregivers, and find acceptable alternatives whenever possible. Unfortunately, allergy triggers can sometimes show up in unexpected places. For example, some parents are dismayed to find that the formula for the leading children’s modeling dough is wheat-based. A new find is Soy-Yer Dough, a wheat-free modeling dough that more kids can enjoy!

Kids have a mind-boggling array of choices when it comes to electronic entertainment. Between high-end gaming systems, online interaction, handheld games, and TV on demand, most youngsters have more than enough to keep them glued to an audio-video set of some kind. Still, there’s something about traditional, creative, real-time forms of fun that can capture a child’s attention and interactive imagination in a way that pixels simply cannot.

Woolly Boo® was born in 2009 when Selma Avdicevic and her mother Vahida Subasic were not able to find sophisticated and luxurious crib-size bedding that was made of natural materials, like organic wool and cotton. So, they created their own line of crib mattress pads, crib bumper pads, toddler pillows, toddler comforters, and infant wearable blankets from 100% organic wool filler and 100% natural cotton ticking. Woolly Boo® has also introduced a line of travel pillows, which combines the same quality and sophisticated style as the sleep products.
