Toy Fair - New York City, New York (2/10/13 - 2/13/13)

The 110th annual American International Toy Fair came to New York City February 10-13, bringing together more than 1,000 exhibiting manufacturers, distributors, importers and sales agents from around the globe. Vendors showcased toy and entertainment products that ranged from classic toys to interactive entertainment and everything in between. Despite a blizzard that socked New York the preceding Friday, events ran as scheduled to the delight of vendors and attendees. Notable lines included American Educational Products, LaLei, Laurent Doll, and Bigjigs Toys.

Two challenges for parents with young children: mealtime and craft time. The process of keeping little ones occupied, entertained, and engaged is difficult in either case. So why not offer combinations that go that extra mile to make your customers smile? Make mealtimes matter and craft time count with great products kids love. Once your customers use Yummy Dough or Kiddy Platter, they’ll be clamoring for more at your store. Be smart and stock solutions from Smarty Parents.

New York International Gift Fair - New York City, New York (1/26/13 - 1/30/13)

The Baby & Child division of the Winter 2013 New York International Gift Fair gave best new product awards to five exhibitors. The Giggle Guide’s own Leesa Valentino was among the judges who presented the awards. The Blogger’s Best award went to Benbini for Benbini Watches; the Toy award winner was Home Grown Books for Set 3; the Décor winner was 3 Sprouts for the 3 Sprouts Laundry Hamper; the Gear winner was MadPax for Blok Fullpack; and the Apparel nod was given to Zipit for their Happy Playsuit. Here are more details on offerings that caught the Giggle Guide’s eye…

KidShow - Las Vegas, Nevada (2/18/13 - 2/20/13)

The February KIDShow at Bally’s Las Vegas (February 18-20) marks the beginning of my twelfth year attending KIDShow Vegas. It’s no surprise to me that KIDShow continues to serve the needs of its loyal and new vendors and retailers. After viewing so much children’s apparel over the last few decades, I still love to attend KIDShow with a keener interest to not only see the fashions, but to learn more about the people behind the brands. That’s why I asked several exhibitors these questions: “What would someone be surprised to know about you?” and “What will buyers be surprised to see in your 2013 Fall collections?”

What do you get when you mix a clean sidewalk, kids and lots of colored chalk? Fun, creativity, and giggles galore are all good answers. Kids can express their inner Picasso on their driveways, sidewalks and more with sidewalk chalk, but one mom on a mission found a way to add even more fun. When Mel Carota’s daughter was 18 months old, she fell in love with chalk. Mel wanted to give her more than just chalk sticks to create with, so this innovative parent figured out how to make chalk in different shapes and colors. You won’t find boring chalk sticks in Mel’s Etsy shop; the fun shapes are all handmade with attention to detail.

The middle school and high school years are busy, exciting, and stressful. Children are beginning to come into their own; they develop their own personal styles and become increasingly individualistic. Even if you don’t usually stock craft projects in your store, you will want to consider the power of Book Blingz. Many schools require students to cover their textbooks to help preserve the integrity of the book and cut costs (clean, covered books last longer and save tax dollars). Book Blingz provides everything a tween or teen needs to construct a personalized book cover in a variety of styles and colors.

The Atlanta International Gift & Home Furnishings Market® - Atlanta, Georgia (1/9/13 - 1/16/13)

The January Atlanta International Gift & Home Furnishings Market was a resounding hit for buyers and sellers who gathered from around the globe. Buyers from every U.S. state and 75 countries attended. Energy was high as showrooms wrote orders for immediate delivery as well as the Fall 2013 season. All things kid related were covered at this major market, including apparel, shoes, keepsakes, gifts, bedding, home furnishings and lots more. Among the lines that caught attention from The Giggle Guide® were Improv Electronics, Mungi Bands, Bling 2o and mimivail.

Many of today’s children don’t spend much time in creative engagement or reading. They do spend a lot of time in front of the TV or playing video games. These activities are, unfortunately, displacing the more active and creative pursuits of yesteryear. While there is no turning back the clock on technology, retailers can give families a way to help develop their kids’ talents that don’t involve any screen time: the board game. With children, though, not just any game will do. That’s where Funnybone Toys really shines.

Every child is unique and wants to proclaim his or her individuality. With Groovy Signs, available in over one thousand looks as well as custom designs, retailers have a great way to invite shoppers to let each personality blossom. The 6” x 22” aluminum sign is the basic, but custom banners, water bottle labels, personalized decals, locker signs and dry erase boards are also available. Tween girls adore signs with quotes like “Camo Girl”, “Georgia Cutie” and “Miss Priss”. Feather boas in a range of colors including hot pink, kelly green, turquoise, yellow and purple come with each sign for added pow.
