The Monster Factory Calms Fright Nights
By Stephanie Hanlon
Imagined monsters lurking under a child’s bed is an age-old fright. Some parents have used “monster spray” to rid the room of beasts, or tried to calm the child with other methods. What if you could offer your customers friendly monsters who could help their little ones rest easy? Monster Factory, a character toy brand based in Canada, creates soft plush monster friends. The Monster Factory motto: “Monsters are just like you and me.” Founded by Adam Dunn, Rhya Tamasauskas and Bliss Man, the Monster Factory began as a collaborative art project that saw the creation of the original six monster characters, known as the Heartbreakers. The response to the launch of these chubby plush monsters was so overwhelming, that this creative experiment swiftly transformed into a successful business venture. Today, its monster population has grown from 6 to over 100 characters, and the list of names just keeps getting bigger, with waves of new monsters being released twice a year. Each one comes with its own name and humorous description that captures the character perfectly in one to two sentences.
There’s Mrs. Morley, an elder monster who delights in knitting sweaters for her boys and has a rather curious collection of porcelain monkeys. Bianca comes with hands on hips and a sassy skirt. She has an equally relatable sassy backstory: she’s quick to speak her mind and often finds herself explaining what she “really meant.” For Valentine’s Day, consider quirky Dirk, who features an adorable heart atop his head and is well known in the Monster Factory for charming his way out of trouble.
Monster Factory has three different types of plush monster lines: Medium and Mini Plush, Studio Edition Plush and Limited Edition Plush. The Medium and Mini are typically carried in retail stores. Studio Edition monsters are made by hand in short runs at the Monster Factory’s Toronto location and are available exclusively online and through the Monster Factory studio. Limited Edition monsters are produced in numbered editions, fixed runs, or as one-of-a-kind toys. All of Monster Factory’s lovely friends are mostly made of soft micro polar fleece and polyester and are totally hypoallergenic. To make a monster sale, visit www.monsterfactory.net
