Linda Flaherty and her daughter Sarah Bailey are co-owners of the exceptional Once upon a time children’s specialty shops in Birmingham, Alabama. Blessed with personalities that are brimming in Southern hospitality and charm, this grandmother and mother duo now operate two very successful retail locations. With fourteen years in the business, the pair have developed a sensibility and keen eye to what customers crave. They offer an elegant selection of traditional, timeless children’s products, along with the latest mix of popular fashion trends and stylings in nursery decor.

Melanie Anderson is first an artist; she began the koochi ku line to create wearable pieces of art. With an eye toward European style, her pieces are well crafted, beautiful, and affordable. Inspired by the birth of her son, she followed her passion for vibrant colors and began making high-style wool jackets and accessories for children. Melanie individually designs and creates each item, and takes great personal pride in each article carrying the koochi ku label.

The Innovative Design Protection and Piracy Prevent Act was introduced in the Senate on August 5, 2010

As reported in the article, “Design Piracy Bill Faces Legal Hurdles,” in today’s Women’s Wear Daily, the legislation, if it passes, would create three new legal standards — an originality standard, an infringement standard and a heightened pleading standard. The bill, if passed, leaves much in question about phrases it includes such as, ‘substantially identical’ and might warrant interpretation by the courts.

In today’s brave new world where social media appears to dominate, advertising through traditional means is still a viable strategy for creating brand awareness and selling product. Of course, the ad must be executed well to be effective. The average American is exposed to hundreds, if not thousands of marketing messages each and every day. Therefore, creating an ad that will “break through the clutter” can be a daunting task. Understanding the anatomy of an effective advertisement will increase the probability for achieving these objectives: getting noticed, being memorable and persuading action.
