K.I.D.S. to Donate $500,000 to Newark Children in Need

Children’s Charity to Launch Year-Long Initiative with a Community Baby Shower Event on April 9th

For Immediate Release

New York, NY – April 05, 2011 – Kids In Distressed Situations (K.I.D.S.), the internationally renowned children’s charity, today announced that it will donate $500,000 worth of new product to provide Newark children with much needed resources to help them survive and thrive. K.I.D.S. will launch the year-long initiative with Newark Now, an organization founded by Newark Mayor Cory A. Booker in 2003 to empower and provide Newark residents with skills, tools, and support to transform their neighborhoods, through a Community Baby Shower Event on April 9th to benefit Newark families in need.

As part of the event, which will take place from 12:00 pm – 2:00 p.m. at the Best Western Robert Treat Hotel, K.I.D.S. will donate new infant and toddler clothes, bottles, strollers, and cribs, among other new baby products to more than 300 new and expectant mothers throughout the Newark area.

“With poverty rates at an all time high, children need our help now more than ever before,” said Dr. Janice Weinman, President of K.I.D.S. “We are very pleased to support the city of Newark as part of our daily mission to provide children in need with new clothes, books and basic necessities to help build self esteem and enable an economically challenged community to grow.”

The Baby Shower Event with Newark Now represents the first in a series of K.I.D.S. donation programs designed to serve the Newark community. In an effort to connect needy children with positive activities, events and resources, K.I.D.S. will provide a range of new products throughout the year to Newark Now’s youth and family initiatives.

“We are very grateful to K.I.D.S. for their tremendous generosity and for giving us the opportunity to help improve the lives of hundreds of Newark families,” said LaVar Young, President and CEO of Newark Now.
