Too Old for Passion?

I have always heard the advice, “Do what you love!” As a partner in a successful ad agency and marketing director at Earnshaw’s, I often got to do what I maybe kinda liked. At least I knew I was using some of my G-given talents. I have always been drawn to the creative side of marketing, primarily on the word side (since I found out in high school I could not draw well enough to be commercial).

A week ago, my daughter, Leslie, graduated from law school, cum laude. Her passion and dream is to work in environmental law for a non-profit agency. Her passion is to win the good fight (or at least some battles) when it comes to saving our world.

My oldest son, Adam, is soon to be an English teacher. A great one. In a town that is laying off teachers by the thousands! He has been offered his first teaching position. He works hard, but I think loves it. Or will. He will be one of those mentors that really make a difference. He has a chance to “do what he loves.”

My youngest son, Jesse, is on-the-way to doing what he loves. He’s studying environmental health. He hears the beat of a different drummer, but fortunately, that beat also has jobs that are waiting to be filled. I see him focused on a goal that interests him like never before. I don’t think I’ll ever hear him say, “I love to work!” But he definitely shows interest.

Me? Passion in work? For dreamers. For youth. Thankfully, for my kids. I just thought I worked hard. Never really hated it, most of the time. But, I heard about “passion.” “Do what you LOVE!” Working with The Giggle Guide™ is my passion! I wake up ready to go! I am always thinking of new ideas. My wife thinks a pod has taken me over! I want to tell the world (or at least the children’s biz) about The Giggle Guide™. And sell massive quantities of premium packages. And edit interesting stories about people. Share ideas that really make a difference. I love working with the people in the children’s business. Meeting retailers, manufacturers, old friends and new. I am passionate, or have a renewed passion again… about my work! I am doing what I love. And love that I have a chance to do it.
I think Donald Trump would be proud!

Lesson learned from a pro

I had the privilege to hear a similar thing from one of the partners, Mike Goguen of, http://sequoiacap.com, Sequoia Capital. They are a venture capital firm that has had the privilege of being the first venture capital investor and business partner in companies that makeup 10% of the NASDAQ’s value. He lives in my town and spoke at one of our chamber meetings. It was the best 20 minutes I have heard. He had 4 points for improving business and our community. They were:

  1. Passion - If you have passion for whatever it is you do, it is never work. This becomes contagious and spreads to your team.
  2. Team Work - You must have a strong team that feeds off the passion from the manager, owner or leader.
  3. Frugality - As managers, owners and leaders, we are responsible for assessing the absolute necessities of running the business or community. We should never spend beyond the means of the business. This was interesting, especially since his house is larger than our Wal-mart.
  4. Killer product - Your product must be unique and exceptional. If you are entering a field where there is competition, the product must improve on those that already exist.

If we focus on those four points when running our businesses, we will always be successful.

I am lucky that most of my life has been working on a project or in a company that is my passion. I love technology and how it intermixes with running a business. I have been excited about The Giggle Guide™, long before it was this beautiful Web site. I can’t wait to show you , that through all the tools the Giggle Guide™ offers, it can help improve your business.
