Imaginations Soar at Superfly Kids

What’s the one dream all kids have in common? To be a super hero, of course! When Holly Bartman’s son turned four he wanted a super hero themed party, but he wanted something a little different. So Bartman jumped behind her sewing machine and started making capes as a take-away gift for all of the party attendees. Upon seeing the creations one of the moms said, “You need to make these to sell!” So Bartman gave it a try. The process was slow to start, but grew through the years. Now, eight years later, Superfly Kids has 18 employees and is making thousands of capes every week.

Superfly Kids is an active imagination company. They produce and sell original, handcrafted, American-made imagination gear for kids of all ages. They believe in empowered play versus guided play. Superfly Kids is all about encouraging creative play, imagination exploration, positive action and connection. The products are geared for kids of all ages, but are most popular with kids up to ten.

Bartman says they have been able to grow because they make such a great product: “By making everything ourselves in our Superhero Factory here in Michigan, we are able to adapt as needed in a timely manner. With an awesome team of super sewing ladies, we have refined our techniques, process, and are able to produce a huge variety of products, all out of the same factory.” Bartman is still lead designer. Once she is happy with a new design, she will teach someone else how to make it. Then they’re off and sewing.

Superhero capes are the top seller and close behind are the cuffs and masks (standard superhero accessories), and the tutus. When asked about what her favorite item is Bartman quipped, “That’s like asking which of my kids I like better!”

Currently, and in development, they have just put out a DIY series. This series includes five design-your-own cape kits and two make-your-own tutu kits. Bartman anticipates both will be big sellers for the holiday season.

Superfly Kids is also making its way into the retail market. Up until late last year items were sold almost exclusively online. Bartman says, “Expanding into the retail market has been challenging but we’re figuring it out.” For more information on all Superfly Kids has to offer, zoom over to www.superflykids.com
