Going Green is Not a Fad!
Going Green is Not a Fad!
Being “Green” is all about saving energy, money, and the planet.
However, it’s more than just recycling your aluminum cans. It’s a lifestyle that is becoming more important as global issues such as healthcare, global warming, water shortages, deforestation, etc. are on the rise. Being green is about being healthy and sustainable. It’s about reducing our carbon footprint and living responsibly.
How does this affect the fashion industry? Simple.
The fashion industry leaves behind a huge ecological footprint. The use of pesticides in growing cotton and the toxic dyes used for their coloring cause a great amount of pollution. The manufacture of t-shirt alone gives out a major portion of carbon and chemicals to the world. This, while also putting clothing on human skin-the most absorbent organ on our body. Solution?
Green Fashion comprises clothing and accessories that are recycled, reused or made from sustainable fabrics. Organic cotton, bamboo, corn, hemp, peace silk, soy and other eco-friendly materials are known as sustainable fabrics. There are also low-impact dyes such as vegetable dyes, and water based inks that can be used on fabrics. These are imperative to individuals with sensitive skin, as they’re hypoallergenic, super soft and chemical-free.
Green fashion is requisite since it causes less harm to humans as well as the environment. And Being Natural doesn’t mean Being Boring!
Here are a few debunked myths about organics:
- Organic is all beige and not colorful- MYTH! At one time, this may have been true, however, with 21st century technology; eco fashion gets an A+ for trend-setting style. There is no visible difference in the colors of organic and non-organic clothing.
- Organic is more expensive- MYTH! Due to the increased demand for these materials and the higher usage, an organic material are equal in price to non-organic materials, and has a range of reasonably to higher end price points.
- Buying eco friendly will not help our planet- MYTH! Purchasing organic cotton clothing, for instance, helps our planet because it supports a way of producing cotton that does not pollute the world with harmful pesticides, insecticides, and synthetic chemicals. Sustainable clothing is another type of eco friendly clothing that is made with an emphasis on using resources that are easily renewable. Shoppers also help when buying clothing that has been fairly traded. Fair trade means that the workers who produced the product were paid an adequate wage and worked under humane conditions.
- Eco Friendly clothing doesn’t have the same quality as conventional clothing-MYTH! On the contrary, the quality of eco friendly clothing is superior. For example, organic cotton clothing is stronger than clothing made with conventional cotton because it has not been treated with pesticides or harsh chemicals, such as bleach. When clothing is chemically treated, it leads to a weakening of the fabric. For these same reasons, organically grown cotton fabric is softer to the touch and allows for greater breathability.
While there is a difference between “natural” and “organic-especially certified organic”, it is important that we begin to shop with awareness. Natural and organic products are easy to find-you just have to start looking! They’re everywhere on the 6th floor-ask your reps!
