Upon retirement from military careers, Susan and David Rabern were looking for a way to bring something of value to their community. Susan had a strong family heritage of knitting, and pairing that with their social conscience, they purchased Oak Tree Farm in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and started raising alpacas. One of their businesses, Shenandoah Fiber, brings the finest fibers to the spinning and knitting community. Their sister business, Provenance Mill Clothiers, allows them to witness these fibers being transformed into the softest, most luxurious garments for children.

If today’s business environment seems to be challenging, imagine being a young woman starting a business very shortly after gaining the right to vote in your homeland. The Roaring 20s were host to powerful men at the helms of companies, but a woman-owned business was somewhat of a rarity. This didn’t deter the vision of one woman, Madame Beatrice Alexander: her desire to create beautiful, quality dolls carried the Alexander Doll Company forward into the next century as a powerhouse in fine dolls and accessories. Now celebrating its 90th year in operation, Madame Alexander has spread joy to thousands of little girls, while generously supporting various philanthropic causes.

Kissy Kissy by Tatiana & Company enters Spring ‘13 with a generous dollop of sweetness and a healthy dose of whimsy. The broad collection serves up baby essentials: Classic looks in the Kissy Kissy line; bolder statements from Kissy Kissy’s Qt-Qt; christening apparel in Besos by Kissy Kissy; and hand-embroidered and smocked garments from Kissy Kissy Premier. The line runs from preemie through size 4T. Parents, grands and friends continue to request by name the brand’s crave-worthy Pima cotton softness and beloved age-appropriate aesthetic.

Nostalgic parents who grew up in the ‘70s and ‘80s may fondly (or not-so-fondly, depending on the source) remember getting hand-me-downs or homemade clothes for holidays, birthdays and changes of season. It was a time when there weren’t trends for those below the age of 21 and kids’ clothes were made simply to be both cute and practical. Olive Loves Alfie, a children’s store in London, was established in 2006 to bring that feeling alive by featuring hand-picked selections of inspiring and imaginative children’s clothing, housewares, toys and games.

Gift giving can be pure joy… or a perplexing problem. There are always people on a giver’s list that simply seem to have everything or defy any specific option. Customers seek gifts that go beyond the traditional to something that clearly expresses the gifter’s caring and thoughtfulness. Having an exemplary gift selection in your store saves customers time, stress, and money; the bonus is that they remember your shop and become regulars. Ideal gift solutions can be found from Elegant Baby, The Grandparent Gift Co., and Tumbleweed Wholesale.

In a time when outsourcing is common, it’s a valuable point of differentiation to find companies that produce quality merchandise in the U.S.A. For expertly crafted, handmade children’s clothing that’s made to order; darling hats, headbands and other accessories that are hand stitched with love; and diaper bags and totes that are stylish as well as functional, consider this trio of brands all under the Gracious May corporate banner: Gracious May, Snugars and Bushka.

Summer is the season of sunshine, but it’s also a time when baby showers reign. If you carry poème & poésie in your stores, there will be no need to include a gift receipt in the card. You will be offering something personal that goes beyond the obligatory oohs and aahs at the party. Saranga Weerasuriya designed the collection with her mother to reflect her heritage and family traditions. From mother to daughter, clothes and linens have been hand-sewn for each and every new arrival, boy or girl, in her family. Bloomers, shirts, gowns, blankets and swaddling cloths are a few of the signature pieces.
