It’s Just What I Wanted!

The Giggle Guide’s inaugural Spotlight shines on gifts for children. Gift is consistently one of the best-selling categories year-round in the children’s business, as consumers are perpetually in need of baby shower, welcome home, recognition, birthday and holiday presents.

Turn back the hands of time to a few decades ago when nearly every household had a sewing machine that was used frequently. Oftentimes, mothers made most of their children’s clothing. A favorite among sewing projects… the classic A-line dress. It was simplistic, timeless, comfortable and practical for active little girls. Children’s clothing has definitely evolved over the years to include a variety of fashion looks, yet the A-line dress remains a staple. Belle ‘N Beaux takes the A-line style to the next level with striking hues, modern patterns and creative embellishments.

In an effort to be more conscious of the needs of Mother Earth, parents often look for ways to “go green” while raising and guiding the next generation. Many caregivers choose cloth diapering as part of their commitment to protecting our planet. In this endeavor, however, they have run into a new problem… finding clothes that fit over the sometimes bulky cloth diapers. Lucy and Kurt Jewson experienced this problem first-hand and decided to attack it head on with their creation of the Frugi clothing line.

Made in the USA” is a declaration stamped on goods made in America — a hallmark that instills pride in the heart of the manufacturer and confidence in the mind of the consumer… and so it should, because turning a product over in our hands to reveal the “Made in the USA” label sets an expectation that the item represents quality and value. Meet four terrific manufacturers who embrace “Made in the USA”: PAIGELAUREN baby, ROCK ME!, Sara Kety Baby & Kids, and BabyFeet Jewelry.

In the consumer market, every book is judged by its cover and every product is judged by its packaging. Consumers quickly become accustomed to labels and brand identity, so new products and brands rely on shelf-sell packaging to catch the eye of shoppers. Plain and uninteresting packaging could be costing you significant sales. Packaging from Edoche, Baby Aspen, Huggy Bunny and Bloomers Baby are a few of the many examples in the children’s market which demonstrate that when the package grabs attention, the sale is more certain to follow.

Young children display innocence, purity and simplicity. With their funny thoughts and inspiring insights they can teach us about life in their own easy-going way. Bente Nilssen, the designer of FROSK wear, a Texas-based children’s clothing brand, believes in the wonder of children and makes clothes that reflect their inner beauty. Pulling inspiration from nature, each piece creates a timeless quality without fancy designs that may distract from the most important element — the child who’s wearing it.

Chicago, Chicago, I’ll show you around…” Those song lyrics hit the right note, because this January’s Chicago Market: Living and Giving® gift and home show will lead you through floor after floor of vendors offering fine products — many making their 2011 debut at the show. Unlike those song lyrics, there will be no mention of “betting your bottom dollar,” because the products presented are sure winners for retailers and consumers! Among the juvenile product manufacturers you can meet at the show, watch for Babalu, Inc., Little Toader, Stephan Baby, and Four Peas.
