In houses the world over, little ones are eating dinner, then getting tucked in. And it’s a sure bet most of those little rooms have a night light, the cure for monsters under the bed and aliens in the closet. For parents who don’t want to serve dinner on plastic divided plates, or ruin the décor with the ubiquitous frosted white night lights, add a little spice with Time Concept, Inc. Incorporated in 2006 and affiliated with Spice Co. Ltd., one of the leading design and distribution companies in the Japanese Gift Industry, Time Concept, Inc. carries modern dining and nursery décor.

The ABC Kids Expo returns to Las Vegas October 15-18 and that has made a lot of people smile. I know that I always have a good time at ABC, and am looking forward to some laughs together with my explorations for new juvenile products. Before the show begins, I wanted to find out what makes some of the exhibitors laugh, and how they plan to generate big smiles from buyers. I was particularly pleased to hear that most of the manufacturers I asked said that their children, spouses or family members are what makes them laugh the most. I agree!

Little girls can say goodbye to sliding hair bows with the new No Slip Clip from Wee Ones.

What’s the most important part of a little girl’s hair bow? When husband and wife duo Miles and Gina Faust took over well-known accessories brand Wee Ones three years ago, the answer was a bit unexpected. It wasn’t style, size or fabric, and it wasn’t price.

The first Hello Kitty item was a plastic coin purse based on a Japanese design created in 1974. The kitty in question was a female white bobtail cat sporting a red bow around her neck. Hello Kitty came to the United States in 1976 where she took the country by storm. Although the initial market for the design was pre-teen girls, the popularity of the icon grew and now includes adults as well. The design appears on all kinds of products ranging from school supplies to fashion accessories and even high-end products. Hello Kitty is internationally famous with a multi-category litter of licensed products sporting her face and body.

No Slippy Hair Clippy CEO and co-founder, Annie Salyer, is a leader in the girls’ hair accessories market, with her eyes focused on global expansion. But the energetic exec still has a strong sense of what made the company tops with customers. Salyer recently answered a few questions about No Slippy’s brand recognition in the marketplace, plus she gave The Giggle Guide® a preview of some of the newest, exciting designs.

Due to changing family dynamics and busy schedules, many children grow up eating their meals on the run or in front of the TV or computer, so less emphasis is placed on the face-to-face interaction that used to be part and parcel of family mealtimes. Does this mean that we’re destined to devolve back to our cave dweller eating habits? Not necessarily. Staci Erickson is one of the parents leading the back-to-manners revolution. Her product, Golly Gee-Pers Table Manners Cards, helps communicate the basics of table manners in a way that kids will understand and enjoy.

New York International Gift Fair - NY Now - New York City, New York (8/17/13 - 8/21/13)

NY NOW, the Market for Home & Lifestyle (formerly the NY International Gift Fair), ran from August 17 to August 21 in typical grand style at the Javits Center. New companies as well as seasoned veterans basked in the updated venue. The LIFESTYLE Collection featured the Baby + Child category, where over 100 companies congregated to show the freshest ideas in the market. The Wind & the Sail, Hickies, PishPosh Mommy, and Fluf were just a few of the in-demand product providers that exhibited at the show.

Anyone who does business within the children’s market understands this important fact: mom is really the focus of the industry. Adorable clothes, educational toys, accessories, and kid-friendly products wouldn’t find homes if moms (and those that love them) didn’t get an eyeful. Making mom comfortable is tops on the list of industry agendas: after all, mom is not only the target market, but she’s usually the heart of the home. SoYoung, the creator of top-of-the-line handbags, diaper bags and lunch bags, understands a mother’s needs: she wants comfortable, functional products that deliver on quality and utility. She also wants something fun and fashionable.

When it’s time for that first school report of the year, it might seem strange to guide kids to a real live book. After all, with the proliferation of iPads and Internet search engines, something simple like an almanac might seem like a light rail to Luddite town. The World Almanac for Kids 2014 has changed a bit from the tomes of your youth. Gone are the text-heavy tellings of the year that was and the year to come, the new World Almanac is colorful, engaging and interesting. As holidays approach, encourage gifts without cords by stocking this and other educational volumes to expand our future generation’s minds.
