The Biz: Feature Articles

Physics is one of the oldest academic fields of study and deals with discovering the rules which all physical objects — little ones, big ones, light ones and heavy ones — obey. It’s a general analysis of nature conducted to understand how the universe behaves. Holding, moving, dropping and rolling all demonstrate physics. Attention-grabbing retailers might set up a demonstration of some of these actions to entice customers to ask questions. This leads into showing them Primary Physics: The Principles Behind Roman Machines, a fascinating book that teaches kids about eight different models of inventions from the time of the Roman Empire.

Are you over them yet? I know it seems awfully early in the new year to be discussing things we’re sick of, but if you’re like me, you’ve already had enough of the “year’s best” lists. For everything from music and books to political gaffes and viral gifs, there’s someone somewhere choosing the winners and losers from the previous 365 days. And just when you think you’ve seen the last of them, the calendar rolls over to January 1st and out come the how-to lists, promising ways to make the next year amazing. Well, as the saying goes, if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.

There is a clear relationship in the improvement of hand-eye coordination through the manipulation of individual puzzle pieces. Another bonus comes in the cultivation of patience. Children who work on puzzles understand that the completion of the project requires a time investment, making it easier for them to approach school and real-life problem-solving situations. According to research appearing in the September 2012 edition of Science, early childhood experiences are particularly important, making it the ideal time to stock up on fun, educational toys that enhance mental development, like those from Red Fish Toys.

So many comforters, so few cribs on the retail floor. Nursery furniture stores always have a difficult choice to make for coveted display space. There are so many styles of coordinated crib soft goods available. Colors, textures, traditional or modern, and bold or neutral are just the beginning of many decisions retailers and parents need to make. For our latest bedding review, The Giggle Guide® looks at Bacati, The Little Acorn, Cotton Tale Designs, and Trend Lab.

“Sound bites” are the news teasers of the airwaves. Lightening-speed information demands that we express ourselves in a snappy way much of the time. This new paradigm is what gives rise to slang, abbreviation (aka “text speak”) and sometimes, just plain poor English. While this may sound like the beginning of the end for our linguistic heritage, there is a ray of hope. Parents can teach their children the skills necessary to communicate succinctly and efficiently, in a style known as “talk less, say more”. Publishing house Little Snail Series encourages this type of heightened communication.

Modular products appeal to a broad audience because they continuously offer a challenge. Kids come back to them time and time again, getting engaged in fresh ways with each new play experience. This is part of the reason that Knock-Knock Co.’s head honcho Jen Bilik immediately saw the enormous potential in Max Knecht’s hand-sewn cuddly wonder, the Clump-o-Lump. Max Knecht has had an eye on creating fun, functional products ever since he was 13, but it wasn’t until a fateful meeting with Jen Bilik that his lovable prototype toy became a star.

As a consultant with a focus in marketing, I have to admit I struggle with the topic of this article. Ultimately though, success comes to those companies who have of all of their business functions performing at optimal levels. That’s why I say, “You can’t hang your hat on marketing alone to drive growth.” The other functions — product development, finance and leadership — are equally important to the success of a business.

Even after a toddler is comfortable using the toilet, accidents happen.
