NY Now, formerly the New York International Gift Fair, is almost here again! The huge trade show – one of the largest of its kind in the world – is slated to run from February 1-6 at the Jacob Javitz Center in New York City, and will include some of the most successful home and lifestyle businesses in the industry, as well as those making their way to the top. Among the impressive line-up of exhibitors are some promising up-and-coming children’s product sellers, including BeanPatch & Co., Lava Lunch, Free Like Birdie, and Luca & Company

Kids are dirt magnets. Between dropped pacifiers, chewed-up toys, and snack-time on the floor, parents need to be one-step ahead of babies and germs. This is part of the reason why a growing number of child products are developed from silicone. Already known for its many industrial and medical uses, silicone brings an added dimension of safety and durability to kids’ products. From the innovative teething devices at Mello & Co. and RaZbaby to the products from ChooMee and 5 Oceans International that make mealtime a snap, silicone is helping parents keep kids cleaner and safer than ever before.

“Almost every parent has experienced a drooler at one point or another and dealt with traditional bibs,” said Lauren Anderson, the mompreneur behind the UnderBib. “When my first baby started drooling, I looked everywhere for something to protect her skin without covering her outfits or irritating her neck. I realized there wasn’t anything out there that solved my problem.” Like other hands-on moms, Anderson rolled up her sleeves and developed the UnderBib, a tot-sized covering that slips under clothing to protect baby’s delicate skin.

There are magnets just about everywhere in our world, from cabinet latches to cars, computers, can openers and more. They’ve also enjoyed a stint of popularity in bracelets that allegedly relieve minor aches and pains. Now, magnets are being put to another practical use – baby and children’s clothing. Anyone who has ever struggled to line up the snaps an infant’s one-piece sleeper will appreciate the sheer simplicity that magnetic closures can bring. Considering the success of MagnaMini and Magnificent Baby, you can’t help but wonder whether magnets will be the paradigm, and if buttons and snaps will some day be nothing but decorative flourishes.

Moving a baby from a bottle to a cup is a big milestone… it’s also a messy one! As children learn to swig with a sippy, parents learn which carpet cleaner works best for the inevitable stains that results from loose caps and hard throws. Then once the sippy cup is mastered, parents have to take on the Herculean task of teaching their rugrats how to drink from a real cup. Kiddos can now drink with the big gulps thanks to the Reflo Smart Cup.

In the first few months with a newborn, parents are generally in a constant state of blurry exhaustion. Yet, somehow through the fuzzy haze of sleeplessness, joy and fear, parents need to track what goes in and out of baby with some frequency. And few things are as fraught as monitoring milk consumption. As days and nights run together, it’s not always easy to recall exactly when that bottle in the fridge was created, and methods like markers and post-its just don’t cut it for accuracy. That’s why there is a need forEepples MilkCharms!

In houses the world over, little ones are eating dinner, then getting tucked in. And it’s a sure bet most of those little rooms have a night light, the cure for monsters under the bed and aliens in the closet. For parents who don’t want to serve dinner on plastic divided plates, or ruin the décor with the ubiquitous frosted white night lights, add a little spice with Time Concept, Inc. Incorporated in 2006 and affiliated with Spice Co. Ltd., one of the leading design and distribution companies in the Japanese Gift Industry, Time Concept, Inc. carries modern dining and nursery décor.

The ABC Kids Expo returns to Las Vegas October 15-18 and that has made a lot of people smile. I know that I always have a good time at ABC, and am looking forward to some laughs together with my explorations for new juvenile products. Before the show begins, I wanted to find out what makes some of the exhibitors laugh, and how they plan to generate big smiles from buyers. I was particularly pleased to hear that most of the manufacturers I asked said that their children, spouses or family members are what makes them laugh the most. I agree!
