The Biz: Feature Articles

“You’re never fully dressed without a smile” as the Annie anthem goes, but it doesn’t hurt to also wear coordinating hair accessories, a knockout dress, fancy coat and step-out-in-style shoes. Those who shop for girls want their little miss sunshine to look adorable from top to toes. Styles that go along with what the adult world is wearing are fun for all, especially when manufacturers interpret mini-me clothing that remains age-appropriate. These vendors offer stylish merchandise that’s fashionable, tasteful and well-made. Need immediates? Help your customers dress their best at all the celebrations of fall and the holiday season with Liv and Lily, Donita, Biscotti and Rachel Shoes.

For basics that go the extra mile, necessories (necessary accessories) from Bella Tunno top the list of must-haves, but it wasn’t always this way. In 2005, founder Michelle Tunno Buelow was a new mom, frustrated because she wanted items she couldn’t find — necessities with panache. With a small goal and a big heart, Tunno Buelow began by selling home-made burp cloths out of her house. Word spread, her brand found wings and other items including Bella Bibs, Binker Pacifier Clips and Diaper Ditties were added. Today, Bella Tunno proudly offers merchants over 400 product styles and options.

Kivelli Baby, AM PM Kids, Paci-Plushies and Dr. Carey’s Baby Care provide the “ahhh” factor. From minky blankets and hooded towels to adorable plush pacifier holders and essential baby care kits, there is something ideal for every new arrival. It’s important to keep your baby shower surprises fresh. The choices are up to you!

Who wants to bundle a baby in a blanket made of synthetic fabric that has been treated with chemicals? Certainly not your customers. Show them hand-woven, all natural fabric blankets from Shi Shu Baby and point out that these blankies are made solely from cotton and bamboo yarn. Cotton has a “strong hand,” meaning it is a durable fiber that drapes well (especially helpful when wrapping a little squirmer). Bamboo has many virtues in that it is very soft and breathable; the fiber regulates temperature and it is said to have antibacterial qualities. Bamboo is a self-sustaining plant, so using this fiber is kind both to the baby and the planet.

Start customers buzzing by promoting skin, lip and hair care products so pure you would gladly use them on yourself. Welcome the natural, family-owned world of Beecology where products are made in small batches to ensure that every item meets high standards. No sulfites or parabens in this line — only totally natural ingredients chosen with concern and care. The beeswax, honey and other ingredients in their products come from family-owned hives where concern for the environment and its affect on people is a top priority.

This time last year I told you about my adventures as a buyer (or more accurately, the plus-one to the actual buyer) at a national trade show. In “Putting Relationships at the Heart of Your Sales Strategy”, I nailed a few exhibitors to the wall for failing to remember that we buy from people we like. Well, a few weeks ago it was my turn on the other side of that scenario. So as we approach the Spring ’13 shows, I hope you find my observations constructive for your business.

Free is good. Who doesn’t agree with that? Publicity is often perceived as free advertising, and as such is highly sought after by anyone looking to get their brand name out there. Those attempting to get media coverage, however, soon learn that it’s anything but free. Instead of paying directly for placement, as is the case with advertising, costs related to Public Relations (PR) are indirect, such as a publicist’s fee. In addition, even the best publicist can’t guarantee placement, because there are a myriad of factors that come into play when a company gets mentioned in the media.

Little girls grow up to be lawyers, astronauts and neurosurgeons so why shouldn’t they start flexing their powers young? Dressing up is a great way to try on an ambition. While neither boys nor girls can fly (but don’t tell them), both can feel strong and powerful when emulating a character who can outrun the wind and zoom around the stars. Bring on energy and authority and encourage girls to dream big; it can start with something as simple as a cape. Who knows? That little bundle of pink and cream might just grow up to be a world leader!

Who hasn’t wanted a second chance, the opportunity to start over? Wouldn’t it be great to go back and have the chance to change something in the past? Since there are no time machines, the best we can do is to try to make the future a better place for ourselves and the people we care about. Parents are excited to have the chance to give children all the things they never had — or could have. The brains behind BeginAgain toys have taken those ideas and created products that match children’s desires to be creative with adults’ desires to promote sustainable living and healthy toys.
