Long before backpacks, students in early America often shared books so the need of a way to tote them was not part of the picture. Fast forward to today when, despite the electronic revolution, most kids carry masses of books not to mention phones, game players and personal treasures to and from school each day. Hence the popularity of the student backpack. At first, backpacks were simply functional, but now style is critical. Kids like packs that make them stand out, are easy to get into and can take the wear and tear they are subject to on the bus, in lockers or just sitting on the floor. Some of our favorites are from Uanyi, Herschel Supply, MadPax and Apple Park.

Nursing smocks and covers are a great way to preserve privacy while breastfeeding. These covers provide a way to take care of business without everyone seeing your business. The problem with many nursing covers — in addition to being one more baby item to carry — is that they are often unattractive and some fabrics can overheat both mother and infant. L’ovedbaby is a company that offers useful and stylish products for new moms and their babies. The 4-in-1 Nursing Shawl is their most popular product, as well as the company’s flagship creation. L’ovedbaby has expanded its product line to include baby gift baskets as well a line of 100% cotton clothing.

The age-old question every parent hears is, “What’s for dinner?” It seems as soon as baby starts on solids, things get much more complicated and parents find themselves questioning if baby is getting the right mix of fruits, vegetables, grains, essential nutrients and more. This is an area where guidance and great options are such a lifesaver. All these companies were founded by moms interested in nutrition, value and convenience: Sage Spoonfuls, Wean Green, BooginHead and Happy Family help families make mealtimes easier and nutritious.

With electronic games and toys topping the list of must-haves nearly every season, it’s easy to lose sight of the traditional pastimes like board games. But family game night isn’t ready to be buried just yet; a new generation of kids is taking advantage of this time-honored tradition, which is helping renew the board game industry. McNeill Designs for Brighter Minds is the company that produces You’ve Been Sentenced!, a language-based board game for ages 8 and up. McNeill is on a mission to promote smart, fast-paced educational games to today’s kids.

Product. People. Price. These have long been the triple threat in success. Old marketing texts told me that one can have two, but usually not all three. ZoLi is an exception, as this top notch company offers the best of all three. Julia Shaw shares a personal look behind the ZoLi brand that she founded with her husband Chet Hong to provide young families with environmentally-safe, functional and sustainable product solutions, with a primary focus on a variety of feeding aids that feature modern, colorful and contemporary designs with easy practicality. I believe their success story has many more interesting chapters and look forward to seeing their future.

Everyone is in on the emerging mustache trend — even kids and women! The hippest and happiest youngsters will love the Wry Baby Snapsuit featuring a joke about the mustache’s return to fashion. Your brightest customers will take a shine to the clever disguise SunStaches sunglasses, including vampire and geek sub-trends. Given how fast trends can change, temporary might be the answer. StacheTATS will deliver on the craze without having to go crazy with a razor. Neon Eaters also joins the party with their stache-festooned socks for youngsters.

If today’s business environment seems to be challenging, imagine being a young woman starting a business very shortly after gaining the right to vote in your homeland. The Roaring 20s were host to powerful men at the helms of companies, but a woman-owned business was somewhat of a rarity. This didn’t deter the vision of one woman, Madame Beatrice Alexander: her desire to create beautiful, quality dolls carried the Alexander Doll Company forward into the next century as a powerhouse in fine dolls and accessories. Now celebrating its 90th year in operation, Madame Alexander has spread joy to thousands of little girls, while generously supporting various philanthropic causes.

Playtime New York - New York, New York (3/9/13 - 3/11/13)

In March, Playtime New York explored the whole idea of space, from personal to inter-stellar, to space-time travel and wide open spaces. Every year since it began in 2007, Playtime has selected an artist to illustrate its trade fairs in Paris, Tokyo and New York. This year, taking off on last season’s successful collaboration, the noted artist was once again American illustrator Patrick Hruby who lent his talents to exploring the winter face of the geometric universe. Playtime’s 2013 fall edition showcased more than 100 children’s brands, including Little Flock of Horrors, Bella Bundles, belle&beanzer, and Fabulous Goose.

You own your own business because you know that it’s more than just making a profit — it’s about using your talents to make a difference. You work hard to find the best products for your customers because it’s more than just the bottom line — it’s about long-term relationships and service. Which is why it’s important to not only partner with companies that have great products, but also promote better living. Toys By Teens is a company that’s giving high school students a window on the realities of business, but with a helping hand.

The development of character is woefully diminished if parents are trying to keep up with the Joneses. While worrying about whether little Molly can walk before her playmate or whether Tommy knows his ABCs in three languages, parents occasionally ignore the most important part of life: good morals. My Friend Huggles are life-size friendship dolls that capture kids’ attention and hearts with positive messages. Kids love to hug and snuggle up with them, but they are also educational because each one has its own positive personality trait for children to embrace.
