New York International Gift Fair - New York City, New York (1/26/13 - 1/30/13)

The Baby & Child division of the Winter 2013 New York International Gift Fair gave best new product awards to five exhibitors. The Giggle Guide’s own Leesa Valentino was among the judges who presented the awards. The Blogger’s Best award went to Benbini for Benbini Watches; the Toy award winner was Home Grown Books for Set 3; the Décor winner was 3 Sprouts for the 3 Sprouts Laundry Hamper; the Gear winner was MadPax for Blok Fullpack; and the Apparel nod was given to Zipit for their Happy Playsuit. Here are more details on offerings that caught the Giggle Guide’s eye…

I can tell you exactly when I swore off wooden rollercoasters. It was mere seconds into my last ride on the Coney Island Cyclone. The constant jerking, bumping, and shaking seemed to go on forever. As soon as I placed my feet on solid ground, I swore I’d never do it again. It had been a few years since I’d been on any sort of coaster, and I’d forgotten the huge difference between wooden and steel. No matter how harrowing the turns, twists and loops, steel coasters at least offer a smooth ride. That experience made one thing clear: when barreling along a track at 60-plus mph, friction is bad.

Yes, we’re movin’ on up at our new showrooms in Atlanta and Dallas and at the New York International Gift Fair in New York from 1/27-2/1.

Find Bows Arts now with Young Colors in Atlanta and Dallas and get a January Gift in Atlanta. We’re located just off the elevator on the 13th floor. Come straight on into Showroom #13S-336A to one-stop shop for Bows Arts, Let Her Shine Jewelry and all Young Colors lines.

We’ve heard it time and again: “the customer is king.” But thanks to what can euphemistically be called a “sluggish” economy over the last few years, too many retailers and manufacturers have decided to let shoppers call the shots. The result is a marketplace that looks defeated, offering safe products instead of innovation. Rather than newness, we’re getting sameness because everyone’s afraid consumers won’t give new ideas a sporting chance.

It’s comfortable, it’s cuddly, it’s convenient and a classic… it even reached pop culture status by appearing on an episode of Friends. It’s Boppy, one of the most popular baby products of all time. Is there anyone in the baby biz that doesn’t know that the Boppy is a soft, uniquely-shaped pillow designed to provide a comfy, supportive cradle for a baby’s delicate head and neck, making it easier for a parent to hold and feed the infant? This simple yet revolutionary invention has become a household name in the last 23 years, and the company is now poised to serve a whole new generation of moms with fresh designs and styles.

How can we help expectant moms get some peace of mind? By giving them what they really want: a break from the concerns and discomforts of pregnancy. Cares include nutritional issues while pregnant, facing the pain of labor, breastfeeding and attachment problems. Other problems concern discomfort; during and after pregnancy a woman’s body is never the same. Companies such as The Clueless Chick, Owie Pillow, MomBod Fitness and Belli are available to give mom exactly what she needs.

A mother-to-be has a lot on her mind. To help her prepare for as stress-free a hospital experience as possible, stock the original Hospital “Go” Bags from Due Date Bags. The Labor Queen Hospital “Go” Bag is stocked with delivery essentials a lady loves (and needs) including a pretty nursing cami; nursing pads; toiletries for her hospital stay; thank you cards; a “shop closed for six week”’ panty; and items for the new arrival, including a “Take Me Home” one-piece, hat and bib. They also offer other bags worth their due. One contains a stash for older siblings, including a coloring book, crayons and a gift for their new brother or sister. Dad’s bag holds a Labor Coach T-shirt and hat and celebratory chocolate bars.

I first met Claire Ekelund, co-founder of Bébé au Lait, about 8 years ago when she introduced her collection of designer breastfeeding covers, which was a first in what became a new product category for nursing mothers. I loved that she had the practical sense of humor to name her creation “Hooter Hiders,” which was brilliant too because it quickly told the function of the product, which previously had not been so fashionably conceived. The company, Bébé au Lait, has evolved into a multi-line brand that is equally known for its fashion and function.

ABC Kids Expo - Louisville, Kentucky (10/13/12 - 10/17/12)

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the ABC Kids Expo seemed to have more special events and celebrations than ever, including the Maternity Row ABC Runway Show; the JPMA 50th Anniversary Innovation Awards; a Town Meeting to introduce Brixy, the new retailer association; a celebratory ABC Breakfast to honor those that have attended every Expo; and the Industry Party that rocked 4th Street Live. A few of the brands that captured the attention of The Giggle Guide’s Leesa Valentino included Sili, Neon Tiki Tribe, Okkatots, and Kidsme.
