While clothing gets the majority of attention at this time of year, supplies and accessories like pencil cases, binders, and of course, backpacks, are essential for not only a student’s academic life, but also their ability to remain organized, cool and confident. School brings along with it new opportunities for extracurricular activities, trips, sporting and social events that may require kid-size suitcases, shoulder bags and other types of carry-ons. Companies like PetSac, Animal Head Backpacks, Hug-mi and Okiedog all have something new and different to offer.

While us adults are always telling kids how good they have it, little ones have a big world to learn their way around. Bombarded with scary and inexplicable events on television and online, intense emotions can be frightening and difficult to cope with. One way Andi Green dealt with those scary feelings was through art. Her drawings created a lifeline to express the complicated monsters in her head. And by personifying the emotions, she was empowered and began to share her creations. And so our world has been gifted with The WorryWoo Monsters, an award-winning series of books and plush dolls written and illustrated by Green.

The Indian city of Mumbai is a bustling metropolis with a long and fascinating history. Growing up in the city in the 1970’s, when it was still known as Bombay, was an exciting experience for Rekha Iyer, founder of children’s clothing line Bouton Kids. Rekha had an eye for fashion early on and her childhood memories involving clothing helped inspire her to create the designs that would lead to the launch of Bouton Kids. Now living in London, Iyer is watching her dream become a reality. Her sister, Sunita Iyer, a New York-based textile designer, introduced the brand to the United States in 2010, making Bouton a truly international company.

For those in North America, the Playtime New York show is the one of the biggest events of the year where designers, toy-makers and retailers all come together to display their latest creations and network with others in the business. This year, Playtime New York took place August 1st-3rd at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Manhattan. As always, Playtime featured well-established businesses as well as new arrivals from around the world. Finkelstein’s, Ultra Violet, tinycottons and Oli & Carol are among the notable companies that were in attendance at this season’s show.

The draw of ballet is multi-faceted – beautiful music, graceful movement – but it’s undeniable that fashion is a large part of what makes the discipline so attractive to so many young girls. Ballet is known for its gorgeous costumes — satin bodices, tulle skirts and sparkling tiaras come to mind. Of course when talking about ballet you can’t forget the shoes. Those soft, pliable flats are super comfortable and help the feet slide through the dance moves perfectly. Linge Shoes captures that Ballerina dream in their every stitch.

Whoever came up with the phrase “Don’t cry over spilled milk” likely never ate out at a restaurant with kids. Not only will the little one be upset over his lost drink, but there’s also plenty to make a mom cry too. A spilled beverage can spread quickly across the table, soaking napkins, dripping onto laps, and possibly damaging any electronics unlucky enough to be in the way. While very young children usually use sippy cups, older kids using full-size cups are known to have clumsy moments, so you can never be too careful. SipSnaps are flexible, colorful drink lids that stretch to fit over just about any cup or glass.

Nearly everyone knows that sunscreen is one of the best ways to prevent burns, damage and skin cancer, but finding the right sunscreen isn’t always easy. Many parents nowadays are discriminating consumers when it comes to personal care products for their babies and children; they’re concerned about the chemicals and additives in many mass marketed sunscreens and want natural alternatives. Unfortunately, many of those natural sunscreens, while gentle and safe, don’t always do the best job of filtering out harmful rays. California Baby is known for its high-quality, effective natural sunscreen and other personal care products.

As Digital Natives grow up with everything electronic, there’s a growing trend of going backward to a simpler time. As we see a resurgence in 80s fashion and throwback cartoons have become kitschy cool (how many handsome leading men weren’t even born when the heroes they play splashed across our TVs on Saturday mornings?), organizations like Jam’n Products are riding the wave. Fostering close relationships with historic vendors like Mattel, SpinMaster and more, Jam’n has cornered the market on old-school cool.
