Having met Mike Berens several years ago while he was selling children’s apparel at trade shows, I contacted him with interest in 2011 when I heard he was the Sales and Marketing Director for Donita Fashions, a new brand of girls’ dresses from Indonesia soon to be launched under his leadership in North America. I made an appointment for Mike to preview the brand to me in Los Angeles, and was excited to hear about all the plans for selling the collection to specialty stores. But what really took me by surprise was when I saw the buyers’ reaction to this new brand over three seasons exhibiting at KIDShow Las Vegas. The buyer audience was SRO and Mike and his national sales reps were selling furiously fast throughout the show, staying busy until the lights were turned off!

We’ve heard it time and again: “the customer is king.” But thanks to what can euphemistically be called a “sluggish” economy over the last few years, too many retailers and manufacturers have decided to let shoppers call the shots. The result is a marketplace that looks defeated, offering safe products instead of innovation. Rather than newness, we’re getting sameness because everyone’s afraid consumers won’t give new ideas a sporting chance.

With a selection of 110 American and International collections, Playtime New York is growing bigger and moving to Saint John’s Center at 570 Washington Street. A great new venue that’s also easy to access and a perfect working environment for everyone.

ABC Kids Expo - Louisville, Kentucky (10/13/12 - 10/17/12)

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the ABC Kids Expo seemed to have more special events and celebrations than ever, including the Maternity Row ABC Runway Show; the JPMA 50th Anniversary Innovation Awards; a Town Meeting to introduce Brixy, the new retailer association; a celebratory ABC Breakfast to honor those that have attended every Expo; and the Industry Party that rocked 4th Street Live. A few of the brands that captured the attention of The Giggle Guide’s Leesa Valentino included Sili, Neon Tiki Tribe, Okkatots, and Kidsme.

As you may already know, the board of ABC has appointed a retail board tasked with launching a new organization for all independent, specialty retailers in our industry. This board is comprised of eight retailers from across the country, representing a wide range of store formats and sizes, some who are members of existing retailer organizations and some who are not.

Lately I’ve been allowing my sweet tooth to make more and more of my eating decisions. Cupcakes in particular are a personal favorite. And clearly I’m not alone. The cupcake business continues to boom with new bakeshops popping up on every street corner. We certainly don’t need them to survive, so why are we consuming them at such a high rate? Obviously we’re addicted to the sugar rush, but there’s more to it. It seems the bakery industry has developed the perfect recipe for cooking up demand. And it’s time for other industries — ours included — to take note. Because let’s face it, no one needs anything brands are selling.
