It’s not often that you hear a politician speak and think, “hey, this guy’s onto something,” but I had just such an experience watching Bill Clinton at the Democratic National Convention. Now, before you click ‘delete’ on this email, rest assured. I’m not getting all political on you, so both you Red- and Blue-Staters can utter a sigh of relief.

With just a month to go before the ABC Kids Expo launches their 10 year anniversary event in Louisville next month, retailer registrations are running 19% ahead of last year, during the same period prior to the show.

According to President and Show Manager Larry Schur, “We are very encouraged to see such a positive response in registrations from all retail channels, especially from those located internationally”.

At this point in time, several product categories on the show floor are sold out, with a total of nearly 3,000 booths sold.

There are certain brands that are considered “lifestyle” brands: Apple, Harley Davidson and Louis Vuitton for example. These brands evoke a particular image in the mind of the consumer. This image speaks to the type of person who uses these brands. We are told what they like to do, what they value and even the places they like to go. There’s no question that these companies have a delineated voice that expresses quite distinctly who they are to the public and how they relate. Not every brand has a clear voice, and those that don’t suffer for it.

I don’t know about you but the average low in Richmond, VA this winter was a mild 42! I am not complaining at all, but spring seems to be visiting us early this year based on my husband’s lawn mowing calendar. After having to cut the grass last week he announced we are a few weeks ahead of last year!

ABC Kids Expo attendees and exhibitors at the 10th Annual ABC Kids Expo® are in for a treat. The Kentucky Exposition Center and its partners are investing over $1.2 million in improvements in time for the tradeshow being held at the facility on October 14-17, 2012.

Returning visitors will notice a much broader sampling of Louisville’s spectacular cuisine at the convention center, such as:
• Additional healthy option menus and kosher options;
• More concession and specialty coffee locations throughout the hall;
• New look and menu of food and beverage offerings;

Since one of the benefits of attending trade shows is to get to know the people behind the brands better, I asked some of the exhibitors attending KidShow Las Vegas (February 13-15 at Bally’s) to preview the Must-See in their collections and a favorite Must-Do while in Las Vegas. And since the show is in luck city, I wanted to know about the luckiest thing that has ever happened to them in their lives. It was inspiring to learn that many replied that they were most lucky in love –– lucky to have their spouse, children and career in the children’s business. Read on, for some good luck tales about winning in Vegas too! Good luck to all. Happy Valentine’s and see you at KidShow Vegas!

Seventy-five percent of new moms are between the ages 20-34. Statics show more and more woman are waiting until they are in their mid 30’s to start families; despite this trend, the majority of new moms are 20-34 years old. This demographic
cohort is known as “Generation Y”. Retailers of juvenile products should become familiar with this demographic, because it makes up three-quarters of your customer base.

You have to play to win.
A little bit of luck…a lot of persistance.

Driving to work today I heard on the radio that the owner of Marriott’s son, heir to the Marriott millions, won 109 million dollars playing the lottery. There was a debate as to whether or not that was fair. My gut reaction was to think “that’s not fair; he’s already rich and doesn’t need the money!” After thinking about it for 10 more seconds I had to laugh and remember I rarely play the lottery and the lottery isn’t biased so I guess you have to play to win.

If you can run a marathon you understand owning a business.

A few years ago I was responsible for a team of sales people to help them grow
their businesses and I went to a training to better my ability with developing
a strong sales force. There the leader of the class said, “If you can run a
marathon you understand what it is like to be in sales.” Well prior to that
position I had never done sales nor had I run a marathon so I took her advice
literally and now 5 years later I recently completed my 5th marathon.
