Allan Rubinfeld has been an inventor ever since he was a little boy; he grew up designing and building new contraptions. A gifted student, Rubinfeld was about to attend medical school at UCLA when a devastating automobile accident left him in a coma. While recovering from his extensive injuries, Rubinfeld had an amazing idea. He asked his mother, “Mom, what did I hate doing when I was little?” and she replied, “Showering.” Rubinfeld then dedicated several months to teaching himself how to sew. He created over a dozen different prototypes until finally he had the rough draft of Soapets.

From Victorian times to the pioneer days of Laura Ingalls Wilder, the bonnet was a staple for babies, young girls and grown women. While earlier generations wore bonnets to protect against harsh exterior elements, today’s babies and toddlers are enjoying the resurgence of the bonnet as the perfect outfit accessory. Of course, the sunshade aspect is a happy benefit. The Beaufort Bonnet Company is leading this return to days of the bonnet. In true Southern style, this South Carolina company was begun in 2009 by a mom to bring her love and appreciation of heirloom bonnets to this new generation.

In another era, children’s clothes were timeless in design and, accordingly, fewer in number. Many of today’s parents hanker for lovely garments made with care that stand up to wear, along with classic looks that don’t go out of style. Eyes will light up when they see designs from Pennymeade, named with a nod to simpler times when kids were dressed as kids and life flowed at a tranquil pace. This company embraces responsible consumerism with fine craftsmanship and coordinating pieces that last long beyond the season.

Every home needs some ambience; a way for the inhabitants to feel cozy, secure and happy. Aesthetic touches like blankets, pillows, throws and other accessories do more than just provide physical warmth and comfort; they add a distinctive look and help create the right vibe. They also provide a way for the residents to express their unique style sense and show appreciation for the things they love. Scene Weaver describes itself as a “feel-good” company that offers multiple collections with a little something for just about everyone. Pickled is a branch of Scene Weaver that offers lighthearted children’s room décor and clothing collections.

When customers look for kids’ clothing, style and fit are high on their lists. But the material used to make the garments is also important. Organic growing practices employ approaches and materials that lessen the impact on our environment. This translates into clothing that is totally natural and toxic-free to farmers, workers, the eco-system and consumers. Doodle Do, Sapling Child, Little Gabies and NOCH are companies that are setting a precedent with organic products that are soft, stylish and eco-friendly.

Capitalizing on the importance of a child’s imagination, Box Play for Kids offers eco-friendly kids stickers to repurpose recyclables into fun, new toys. The company was inspired by owner Janette Harwell’s 2-year-old daughter and her love for stickers and a “penchant for playing with empty boxes.” Harwell continues, “I had an ‘aha’ moment that lead to the invention of Box Play for Kids.” Fortunately for Harwell’s daughter, both her parents are designers who have specialized in package design, branding and advertising for over 20 years.

One of the most surprising changes many new parents face is just how long it takes to leave the house. What used to be a quick ritual involving throwing on shoes and a jacket, grabbing your wallet and heading out becomes a juggling act featuring diapers, toys, blankets, wipes, snacks, and of course, the baby himself! Most moms agree that a good diaper bag is the first line of defense against frazzled mornings. Companies like Oemi Baby, Diapees & Wipees, JP Lizzy and Daddy & Co. offer diaper bags in a variety of styles and sizes, so that just about any mom or dad can find what they’re looking for.
